Are there any of the major manufacturers that would make barrels with the same twist as a 1903 Springfield???

I have a sporterized one that needs a new barrel, and a new stock....

I have access to some Remington, Winchester and Ruger barrels...and Mausers also...

thanks
seafire
cheers

HI, Seafire! Unless my memory has completely gone south, the original Springfield barrels all had 1-in-10 twist for the '06. I believe that is the same twist used by most major gun manufacturers today for '06-chambered barrels.

One thing, though, the threads are considerably different between most current commercial actions and the Springfield, so you may well have to also set the barrel back, re-thread and re-chamber, depending on which specific barrels you can get your mitts on.

If it was just me doing it, and I wanted a hunting gun rather than a target shooter, I'd probably go with one of the less expensive commercial barrel blanks, if I was going to have to chamber and thread anyway. That way you could have the profile, final length, and barrel steel you want at little or no more cost.

Forgot to mention, Seafire, that you can sometimes come across brand new still in the cosmoline spare original Springfield barrels, at gun shows. I think the last one I saw a few months ago had an asking price of $75 on it. Those are almost always 2-groove barrels, but some of them do have 4 grooves. I like the two-groovers just as much as the 4-groove ones, so that's what I buy.

Got one not too long ago for $10, as the guy apparently thought the old caked cosmoline was rust!!

I have re-barreled two 03 Springfields with E.R.Shaw barrels.. have had good success with 'em. they will full lenght chamber and thread or short chamber, your choice, for $147 shipped. Chrome moly.. SS is around $200. One of my Springfields is wearing a 338-06 barrel and is my go-to rifle for Wyoming... HTH Les

AC and Les,

thanks for the feed back...

I was looking to make it into another caliber besides 06....

I was looking at an ER Shaw barrel on it, if it wouldn't thread right up to one of the after market barrels I have sitting around...

Picked it up for $100.00 a while ago..I has a Timney trigger and a shot out 06 aftermarket barrel that is 20 inches and a botched up stock.. so I am going to order a Boyd's laminate for it...

Shaw was telling me last week that they are quoting 4 months on barrels right now, as they are getting bombarded with orders for AR barrels...
