Does anyone know much about Gentry muzzle brakes? I hear that they are one of the quieter ones. I have never been a fan of brakes because of the noise like the boss brakes; it just kills my ears when a friend shoots his. I am thinking of maybe going with one if there is somewhat of a quieter one. Lets keep it real, I know it will be loader than normal but I guess what I am asking is there some better than others for noise. Thanks a lot for any info.

Not exactly an answer, since I haven't used Gentry's but I've been around and shoot a lot of muzzle brakes. IMO NONE of them are quiet enough to use without serious ear protection. I use plugs and muffs. If they aren't louder for the shooter's position then they can't be working very well since they work by redirecting the gas stream to the rear. That said, I like them very much for practice, working up loads, etc. but I take them off for hunting. xxxxxxxxxx When considering US based operations of guides/outfitters, check and see if they are NRA members. Just curious, what has been your experience with POI shift when removing the brake for hunting? _______________________________________________________________________________ This is my rifle, there are many like it but this one is mine. My rifle is my best friend, it is my life.

I can't speak directly for the Gentry brakes but they use the same design as the Weatherby Accubrake. Instead of directing the blast rearward towards the sides they use baffles to do the "braking" and the blast goes a few degrees forward. The Weatherby brakes remove approximately 53% of the recoil so I would guess the Gentry brakes are about the same or close. By not directing the blast rearward the noise is simply not directed at the shooter or those on the benches next to you. The only braked rifle I have is a 338-378 Wby (100 plus grains of powder) and the only difference I've noticed is that, since there are also holes on the bottom, the concussion is a bit more with the brake then without. It bounces off of the concrete bench and floor. I've shot it off the bench with and without the brake and have not perceived any POI change. By the way, the big 378 case is a handful off of the bench without the brake . I've had a couple of folks at the range assist me in comparing the noise with and without the brake. The consistent answers I get is that with the brake there is more of a thump but not really louder and without the brake it only sounds different but is still loud. Ken.... Westpac: My experience has been that POI shift is minimal, for instance in my more or less everyday go to rifle, a braked .300 WM, it is approximately a 1/2 inch at 100 yards. Unless I know I'm going to be shooting at longer ranges, I ignore it. If I have to shoot something longer, I either put the brake back on (such as if a really long shot became necessary on a safari)or sight in without it initially, say if I was going on a open range type mule deer hunt. xxxxxxxxxx When considering US based operations of guides/outfitters, check and see if they are NRA members. Mr. Vais, I do not know the other fellow. I have read your postings several times. The official court procedings were posted on one of the forums, may have been this one. I am sorry for you, but they ruled in the other man's favor. You need to get on with your life for your health's sake.

Westpac- I have a Mod. 70S/S Classic .300 WM which I just took to smith today to remove Boss, cut barrel & recrown. With Boss removed mine shot 3" groups @ 100 yds, not acceptable! My objection to the Boss is the constant adjustment required when working up handloads and changing factory loads(brands and bullet weights). I can handle the recoil. Will accuracy be OK afterward? Don't know; might wind up installing new premium barrel. I would never buy another rifle with Boss, unless it was a steal and I could then alter it.
