Having moved back into the Salt River Valley after a 20-year hiatus, I no longer know squat about the local gun shops. All of my old favorites are closed or specializing in mega-buck optics, that sort of thing.

Where exactly would you locals recommend going to swap lies, drink some coffee, and fondle used guns? Am interested in rifles and pistols, but not really into shotguns anymore....

Doesn't the local BATF office have some stuff to sell? OK, I realize I'm not really answering your question, but nobody's giving you any feedback which is inexcusable on AR.

Thanks, Doc...

At the moment I still haven't the strength to drive very far. I do know J&G pretty well from the old days. Joe & Grace DeSaye (particularly Joe) used to be good friends of mine when they had the original J&G Rifle Ranch up at Turner, Montana.

Joe and I used to do a lot of business together (him selling, me buying) back in the early/mid '70s when the Canadian dollar was worth more than the U.S. buck. I'd purchase a few thou in American dollars, take them into the U.S., crossing the border at Climax, Saskatchewan, and come back home to Regina with a pickup full of rifles and loading components.

Joe also provided me with the first 10 pounds of Pyrodex ever gotten into Canada, which I picked up for the RCMP labs before they could get any legally imported from the 'States...

Pyrodex wasn't available into Canada until approved by the Douanes. The Customs folk wouldn't issue an approval until it had been tested by the RCMP labs. The labs couldn't test it until they could import some. Typical big government "Catch 22". So I solved the problem for both (and for Canadian shooters) by bringing some across on my own for the RCMP lab. Declared it as "smokeless powder", which it turns out spectrographic analysis showed it wasn't, but that's a whole 'nother story. It might be properly classified as smokeless now, since the original factory blew up, killing the inventor Don Powlak (SP?). They may have redone the formulation. But I am no longer in a position to know.

Never really developed a relationship with Joe's heirs, however, even after I had moved to Scottsdale and J&G had re-located in Prescott.

Anyway, thanks for your suggestions and good wishes. Foot reconstrucation surgery 13 days ago went fairly well. They took out one of the stainless steel pins yesterday...IF the healing goes well, they will try to remove stitches next Tuesday. In the meantime, I am only allowed to be up two hours per day and only 10 minutes of that time with my foot below heart level. Have to keep it elevated to prevent edema.

Best wishes anyhow, and thanks again for your gentlemanly help and thoughts.

Pax vobiscum, y'all

AC

Bass pro I believe has a gun section too.

Thanks, KC

The problem as I see it is that there are far too many places in the Phoenix metropolitan area for me to sort out the "good" ones without help. Must be at least 150 or more with "Guns" signs, maybe multiples of that. Most are also buyers/sellers of gold, diamonds, etc., and lots are also pawn shops. But, when I lived here before, the best places to buy used stuff were joints like that.

It's just that at almost $4 per gallon for petrol, I have neither the time nor money to go through them all. So, thought some of the locals would tell me which are some of their favorite places. Apparently not, though...

Thanks for your info, though...I appreciate it.

When considering US based operations of guides/outfitters, check and see if they are NRA members. If not, why support someone who doesn't support us? Consider spending your money elsewhere.
