I see in various gun mags a full page, very slick ad for "rebuilt/refinished" German M98 8MM surplus rifles for sale at $400. These guns are advertised as high quality, reworked German surplus. And then I see other M98 actions, unworked, for sale from various sources here and elsewhere on the Internet for much, much more. (Mexican, Argentine, etc.) Why the sometimes huge price difference? If a guy was looking for a M98 action to build a rifle on, wouldn't he be better off buying one of the so-called "rebuilt" surplus guns? 114-R10David

See the FN commercial action for sale in the classifieds for $400.00. "I ask, sir, what is the Militia? It is the whole people. How many VZ-24 actions do you want for half that? $400 for a milsurp M-98 just for the action is way way way too much!!! /////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////// "Socialism is a philosophy of failure, the creed of ignorance, and the gospel of envy, its inherent virtue is the equal sharing of misery." TWL, This is just my opinion, based on the written word and collector comments. "Unworked" rifles are desired by collectors, the majority of which want a firearm that is "unaltered" by anyone or thing, with the exception of fair wear and tear from time and use. The "refurbished rifles" offered by several importers are not considered original anymore as they have been refurbished by someone other than a Whermacht armorer. Other than having been refinished and reblued there is absolutely nothing wrong with those rifles. My two cents. Regards, Eric "We must all hang together, or assuredly we shall all hang separately." Yep. Mitchell's Mauser ads. My interest is purely academic, as I am not a smith. I have seen more than a fair amount of "unworked" mauser actions for sale for a lot more than the complete rifles in the Mitchell's ads. So I thought---given my lack of expertise in this area---that a regular guy who didn't want to pay through the nose for an action could buy the Mitchell rifle and go from there. It was just a question in my mind. Thanks for the input. 114-R10David
