I have a 700 Titanium in 7mm-08 with a blind magazine and none of my reloads will fit in the magazine I so can only load one round under a closed bolt. If I stack another in it won't pick it up because the tip of the bullet catches on the feeding ramp upsetting and dropping the rim too low for the bolt to catch it. I have studied what would need to be done in order to open the magazine up at the rear and I think there is enough space. I need to get another 2mm, maybe 3mm before it will work. Obviously I would establish exactly how much I need to take away if I go ahead with this. It's a bit hard to explain without pictures but I'll try; There are two threaded holes in the underside section of the action that needs to be cut away. One takes a small screw that secures the magazine box, which locks into the underside of the reciever, the other anchors the front screw of the trigger guard. The mag box screw can easily be relocated and to get around the second screw I have thought of installing a steel strip in the stock, under the trigger guard where a shorter screw can secure the front of the trigger guard. Next the bolt stop would have need to have a little taken off it to give the extra few mm of clearance I want, I don't see this as being a problem, but that's why I'm asking for advice here. Obviously the magazine box needs to be cut and a section welded in or rebuilt from scratch. Other that that I can't forsee any problems other than getting a nice finish on the section of the action that needs to be cut away. I will try to post some pics with outlines of the cuts and screw reloations that need to be made, if that would make everything easier to understand. Basically, how hard can this be to get right?

You can't be talking much needed clearance if the round will fit now but not feed up. If you are dead set against seating the bullet in a few thousandths to clear, then you may want to consider turning the barrel in a turn or two (.0625 - .125) to shorten the throat which would allow you to touch the lands while still using the stock box.

I took a 700 short and bought a 700 standard length box for it. I cut and rebent the back of the box so it was 3.1 inchs on the inside of the box. I remachined the back of the magazine well in the action to accomodate the length of the new box. I also machined the bolt stop back so the total bolt travel was enough to clear the back of the box and allow the next round to be fed. The cartridge we were setting up for was a 284 Win. with a 139gr bullet with an overall length of 3.050, it works great. The rifle has a hart stainless BBl. and a Brown stock. The conversion basically turns a Rem short action into an almost intermediate length action. A ture intermediate length would be 3.150 inside the box. Happy modifying. TIMAN

Try Wyatts extended Magazine and follower and you shouldn't have to mess with the box, the other work will still have to be done

Is it true that firearms designers at the major mfrs are all dumb? Cut the chamber and throat to dimension X and then design the magazine so you can't seat the bullet out to touch the lands and use the magazine. It has happened to me with every rifle I've worked up a load for--not necessarily that I had to be so close to the lands I couldn't use the magazine when I found the best combo, but if I seated the bullets out to touch the lands, I would just about bet you would either have too little bullet shank in the case shoulder for good retention, and/or you could only put one in the magazine. That's why my 6mm Rem project rifle is being built on a .30-06 length action! An old pilot, not a bold pilot, aka "the pig murdering fool"
