Has anyone done a 700 bolt with a Ar-15 style extractor? It sounds simple enough, maybe even more so than a Sako. Have a project rifle that I might like to try it on. Dog-duster

Hello, Last issue mil/le type 700 I fired had the 15/16 extrator installed. Cheaper than the Sako and very available. For sporting rifle, would not suggest it be done, but many do it. Have shot a whole bunch of ammo in the 700 and I never had a problem with the std. extractor. Newer factory ones are a "snap" to install, no rivet, in the event you do need one. It is felt that such a machining/milling/ modification will degrade the design to retain gas flow in the event of a failed case?? I have had case separation occur, primers blown, neck separation, etc. w/ the 700 over the 40 plus years been shooting them and I do not have any fault with the original design. To each his own!! Good Luck

I agree, the factory extractors are just fine as they come. However, for those who prefer, or, insist, I install both Sako and the Howa 1500 style extractors, which are like the AR-15 types. One isn't any easier, or, more difficult to do than the other. Both types require a fair degree of forethought and precision machining.
