| I have a question for you all. I was threading a Mauser barrel. Normally I cut a .080" wide relief near the shoulder. Well, my brake failed to disengage and the bit ran into the shoulder. To clean up this little mishap required widening the relief to .110". Is this too much? I can simply shorten the breech end and recut new threads. There is plenty of support left in the barrel for the chamber even if I shorten the barrel. Opinions please. |

| When I had my father's sporterized 98 rebarreled a few years ago, the barrel that came off had only four full threads engaged. From there forward to the shoulder the barrel shank was relieved. The barrel was a Douglas chambered for 7mmRemMag. The barrel never let go, but it never shot well either and that's why we had it rebarreled. Used a different 'smith, though. |
