Remington Model 788 in 6mm Rem

Can anyone give me some information about the Remington Model 788? I have a friend of mine that has one and wants to sell it. It is the only gun he owns and he doesn't shoot it very much at all. The stock is in pretty good conditions, no visible scratches or dings that I could see, but there is little rust here and there on the barrel, but the bore and bolt look good to me. It shoots pretty good to. Smoked a critter this weekend with in while it was feasting on a dead steer of ours.

I just don't know anything about that particular rifle that Remington made and would like to know a little bit more and an estimated price of what you all think it may be worth. He has been told $250 by one fella.

Like many Remington's it is in dire need of a trigger job. It doesn't have any creep, but it is awfully heavy. What are my options? Also, can the safeties be replaced on these too?

Thanks in advance! [Big Grin] [Big Grin]

Would not be smoking any more vultures and bragging on it. They are protected too.

Hi,

Of all the calibers out there for the 788, the 6mm Remington is one of my most favorite chamberings. The 6mm Rem is a little scarce but a good varmint and deer rifle. Most of the 788's that I've seen have been real tack drivers. I only have five right now. It seems that the price of the 788's have been going up the last few years. The average price around here is between $350-$400 with the 6mm Rem demanding the higher prices. If you can find a factory clip, the prices are around $75. Timney has just came out with a trigger that is adjustable from 1-4 lbs for $90.65. No factory rifle has a faster lock time than the 788. The 788 used to be the action the benchrest boys used to build their custom rifles on. Out of the box, the 788's would out shoot the 700's.

The 788 you mentioned for the price he's asking is a very good buy. IMHO with a Timney trigger and a good scope, you'll have a gun that will hold it's own against any factory rifle out there.

Tell your friend that he has a real treasure and who ever buys it is one lucky guy.

Ditto what Big Dog said. I too have a small herd of 788's, great rifles. The 6mm is a VERY under rated caliber in my opinion (think 243, but better). Yes the clips are getting pricey, but the rifle is still worth it. If he's offering it to you, snap it up, that's a good price. - Dan

The 788 was a good economy rifle. The trigger sucked but was fixable or replacable. I built a Light Varmint BR rifle on a 788 which worked pretty well. The actions have some shortcomings. Bolt handles are sometimes poorly attached. Camming power is lacking so it can be more difficult to extract a stuck case. Most people who own 788s are fond of them.
So the purpose in shooting the vulture was to save a dead steer? A dead steer isn't something that really arouses my protective instincts! Regards, Bill.

Buy It, Buy It Now!

The 788's were a good rifle, even the ones that wouldn't shoot were easily fixed with sandpaper and oil(the stock to metal fit wasn't always the best).

The other problem is the magazine, they get lost. Every year they seem to get more expensive too.As for magazines, watch eBay...I'm constantly amazed at what is up for bids.

I have a couple of 788's (one in 6mm) and love them both. Not much to look at, but they are real shooters.
If you do pick it up (which I suggest you do - especially at the price you mentioned), don't loose the clip! They are hard to find and expensive as hell if you do find one!

Where did you find a Timney trigger for a 788? They don't list them on their website.

Timney talked about this earlier this year (the trigger) and when I phoned them this spring they said June for production. - Dan

Hi Hollywood,

I talked to Debbie in the service dept and was told the 788 triggers are ready. They want $90.65 for one trigger plus $6 S&H but if I order four, I'll get them at dealers cost, $64.75 plus $6 S&H.

Crowrifle,

I just checked the American Ornithologists' Union website and found nothing on vulchers. I also checked with the US Fish and Wildlife Service http://ecos.fws.gov/tess_public/TESSWebpageVipListed?code=V&listings=0#B and also check ODNR's site http://www.ohiodnr.com/endangered/endangered4.htm and found absolutely nothing on vulchers at all. If you know of a specific link please post it.

This may be a dumb question, but how do I find out when the rifle was made and if there are any problems with it (recalls)? I checked Remington's site and unless I was just blind I couldn't find anything.

It is spelled "vulture" -- try that and you will likely get some hits on those websites.

Ah, our fine public schools. Thanks for the spelling lesson jpb! jcsabolt2- try turkey buzzard, but they're protected too.

Buy the gun. I've got one that my 13 year old niece used last year. She shot an elk, whitetail, and antelope. It'll get the chance again this year. Just don't use barnes "X" bullets on the goats.

Extra mags can be a problem, there are people out there who can modify the .308 class mags. As well as modify the existing trigger to make it adjustable.

Would you believe I have a Masters in Civil Engineering. [Eek!] My grades were much higher in math and science. Looks like I need a spell checker. Anyway, still couldn't find anything stating on a government site stating that they are protected, but I'll keep looking even if it means I have to call a government official.

Thanks for the other information too! [Big Grin]

Vultures are migratory and perhaps are covered by the migratory bird laws. You might want to look under Raptors also. I'm pretty sure they're protected.
FYI, I'll buy the gun if you don't want it. [Big Grin] [Big Grin] [Big Grin]

That explains everything! You do use a spell checker- i.e. a calculator. No problem here, just fun to dog pile on some harmless jabs to the ribs. I won't even go into what college algebra and trig did to my GPA.

Hi again,

If you e-mail me the serial # of the 788, I'll tell you when it was made. I'll also give you the web site for the 788's. Catch you later,

Funny...when he said he smoked a varmit I was sure he was talking about a coyote..not a buzzard.
Buy the rifle...its a bargain at that price, and is an excellant rifle...noted for its accuracy.

Good luck and good shooting
