Halfmoon or Talley?

I'm having a couple of rifles built on standard commercial (Zastava) Mauser actions. One a 30-06 the other to be 9.3x62.

The next question to decide on is handle shape. I'm looking at either the Halfmoon or Talley handles, but would still consider others

Here is the info Jim at Halfmoon sent me:

A: Classic Small .750 B: Standard Classic .790 C: Oberndorf-style .840 D: Generic Round Ball .805 E: German-style favored by Martin Hagn .735

Here is the Talley (from Talley's website). I quite like it as well

Thoughts or other sugestions anyone?

cheers

My bias is toward the Oberndorf style.
But you are the selector. What you like is what matters.

Pick the one you like; what I like doesn't matter.

Exactly.

My personal favorite is the Half Moon Oberndorf style. But I have installed a ton of Talley handles.

It's your rifle, pick the one YOU like best!

It doesn't matter. Once you grind the bottom half of the knob flat and checker it you won't be able to tell the difference. Big Grin

Before you make your final decision head on over to Duane Wiebe's site and take a look at what he has to offer, as well as photos of how he installs his.

I used a Half Moon Oberndorf on my Zastava build. It is the 9.3 LH on the Customs Afield thread. Not the greatest pic but it's comfy in the hand for sure.

Cheers all.

Bluefish, I finally found your picture. Looks like nice overall lines. Hard to see the details, but a good looking rifle. Mine are also LH actions.

I had two installed on my Zastava mausers using Talley's. It is nice but I wish it was longer by a half inch to an inch.. just my preference.

I choose Oberndorf. I like Original Mauser best. Have used Talley also but like the larger knob. It just looks right on a 98.

I'm in the same boat so I turn down what it left on the talley stub to add about 3/8 of an inch.

I sell a long and xtra long version of the Talley.

I am hoping to have a new version of my Oberndorf bolt handles made up in a few months. After measuring a multitude of bolt handles and getting a few blue prints from Speed I think I will finally have it revised to where I like it.

What I really like is the WR or H&H, bolt handle that rolls down and then is bent back to the arm on the bottom..I do not know the name for it, but it works like a charm and is flat against the wood..I also like my old commercial very early Brno with the acorn..But I use mostly Talleys and have them checkered 4 panel.
