I'm thinking of completing the customization of my Rem 700 stainless in 300 RUM. I've pillar bedded the McMillan stock, and put in the jewel trigger, and had James Wisner put on his three position safety. Now I think I want to get a custom barrel, and I'm hoping to get suggestions from you good folks. I would like to preserve the lightness of this rifle (ie, I like the weight and balance of the factory barrel, I don't necessarily like the 26"....would prefer a 24"). What about twist rate??????

Im not a real numbers guy so I cant tell you what your FPS would be minus 2 inches of barrel. But you can count on loosing about 75 to 100 FPS with a 24 inch barrel. The really sad part of this is that I dont know of anyone with a factory 300rum that gets within 100 FPS of advertised velocity.
Most of the 300rum that I have seen rebarreled were 28 inch and a heck of a lot of them were 30 inch.
This is what you have to do to get the full advantage of that big overbore case. If I were just stuck on a 24 inch barrel I would at least go 300wm. Just my 2 cents.
As far as barrel maker goes let your conscious be your guide. Any one of them should be able to duplicate your factory contour.
I have a Pac-Nor and just started putting a Douglas on my 300wsm today. It will finish out about 26 inches. With the 251/2 incher it wears now it will go 3325 with a 150gr N BT. For what it is worth I have seen one factory 300rum and factory 150gr Rem not reach that velocity. So buy all means use enough barrel.

Good Luck and welcome to AR.

I own two 300ultramags both with 26" pac-nor barrels. One reaches 3375fps with 180gr handloads while the other reaches 3395fps with 180gr handloads.I would not even bother with a 300ultra magnum with any barrel shorter than 26".If you insist on a 24" barrel I would suggest the 300win mag instead.

I'm OK with the 26", what about the twist rate if I'm staying with 180 and 200 gr?

Use the twist calculator at the bottom.

1-12" would be fine.

The barrelmakers generally recommend 1 in 10" for this cartridge.

I believe you pick the cartridge for performance and the barrel length for handling chartacteristics.....

A hundred FPS don't mean squat!!!!!If you want an 18 1/2" barrel on your .378 weatherby.....hell...it's your money...spend it your way...

1 in 10" twist is what I'd use...
