Gentlemen, I'm considering building a custom bolt action in 300 H&H. CAVEAT: LEFT HANDED ACTION, only Suggestions please? I was thinking of the Hein barreled action and having the gun stocked here in Australia............... Cheers, Blair.

Do you have a budget or a BUDGET? GMA makes their mauser actions in left hand configuration. The express magnum size would make a slick rifle in .300 H&H. No flies on Hein either.

Dave, $5000US or so. I've heard the GMA needs a lot of work to get it up to scratch, whereas the Hein is ready to roll............................. Blair.

Can't go wrong with the Hein action. I have been having wet dreams of a .375 and .300 H&H pair on Hein actions for a while. The price of knowledge is great but the price of ignorance is even greater.

Winchester M70 works pretty good for a 300H&H. Terry -------------------------------------------- Well, other than that Mrs. Lincoln, how was the play?

Likewise mate. The 375 would be the second rifle!

Had considered it, but the only problem I can see is the availability of a magnum action in left hand and the amount of work needed to clean it up............................

M98, If not mistaken,I believe you may have a Harrie action on order or in possesion, can you post some detail photos for all to see? I believe Brian was planning a small run of 375HH length receivers recently, but dont know where he is at with that. Price about US$3500,well within Blairs stated budget. The Hein recievers seem ok for the price, but the one I viewed at SCI seemed to have sub-standard barrel tenion thread quality for what was supposed to be a custom action. You know, when one machines a thread and it has rips&tears obvious to the unaided human eye on the surfaces & peaks of the thread, like its ploughing through instead of cleanly cutting, well that was its appearance. Sure still strong, but not what one would resonably like to see on a new $2k custompre64 receiver. That may not be how they send their recievers out, but if thats what they have on the table at SCI, then it would be easy for many to assume that they do, though it is not wise to assume. Non the less it is their responsibilty to represent themselves properly, to avoid unfare or undue assumptions that humanly do happen which may in turn effect the sales and/or image of their product. It would not necessarily stop me buying one, but I would clearly stipulate that the receiver not leave the shop in such a state, and that they send a few final detailed photos and signed check list of reciever function, before any final payment.

M70 Classic. You don't need a magnum action. The standard (.30-06 length) action is .375 H&H length. You have to open the bolt face and adjust extractor.

Yes, they do take the time to make. I guess thats why others really don't want to screw with it. To make one in 8 hours takes at least a million in equipment. For what, 25 orders? hardly economical. The M-98 has the most machine opperations of all dual opposed 90 degree front lockers that I know of, More than any Hein/70 or Harri/70. On the flip side. I'm expanding into a larger shop this spring and have found a good machinist with 26 years experience to work with me, he's quick in the mind, and clever, I will teach him quickly all the little tricks to making a m-98, there are more than just a few. This guy is of German decent and is a genuine craftsman. Good help is hard to find, but I have found some and the best part is he has his own mill and lathe so combined with my equipment we will increase production of the Satterlee M-98. Not A Drag, but a good thing. Timan AKA/Stuart Satterlee

I would consider starting with a LH model 70 classic, or a LH Waffenfabrik Hein if you want some square bridges on it. McGuire might try to get you to consider a Mark V, but a Mark V in 300 H&H would be perverse.

The Weatherby Custom Shop won't do the 300 H&H but both H&H and Purdey will do a 300 Weatherby. Long live the US of A. I forgot to mention the Saturn V and the moon landing. That "V" Mike

I am leaning towards the left hand Hein. Remember Dan; Mike is perverse, but even he wouldn't suggest a 300 H&H on a Mark V

Thanks Daniel. I will do.

Recently I adquired a Zastava M70 rebarreled to 300 H&H, with a Sunny-hill drop triggerguard. I am happy with it. The original cartridge was a 375 H&H. It's a non expensive option, if you use the original components inn the project(Triggerguard+Magazine and Stock). Ignacio Colomer
