I'd like to have a light short rifle built. I don't currently have a rifle I'd want to use for this so I'm shopping. I assume a Rem would be the smart way to go. What would be the differences to consider between a model 7 or 700 or is there something else I should look for. This will be a short action with a fairly light 20'bbl. Something to carry in the truck and call with. Kind of a handy all purpose small caliber rifle. All input appreciated. Thanks REM

REM Welcome to the forum. I just barreled a 700 short action with a 22" Pac-Nor light weight and put a Hi-Tec sheep hunter stock on it. It weighs 5lbs 4oz sans paint or recoil pad. The model 7 would save another couple oz. but I couldn't find one for the right price at the time. I don't know how to get much liter with out going to one of the sure nuff custom jobs like Rifles INC., NULA or MGA. Maybe one of the little Sako's, but finding one for a reasonable (too me) price would be hard. I will start the skeletonized bolt handle fluted bolt and action weight reduction plan next week to save another few oz.'s. Mostly just to say I did it, and to get on Mr. Davids (gunsmith) nerves. He hates to build ugly guns.

The Remington 722-721, 7 and 700's are really a cheap design. When you are investing money into a big game rifle it's better to consider other actions. For varmints and targets the Remingtons are not as bad. Right now the Montana short action is going for $350. It's a far better design than a Remington in terms of it's safety, CRF and even it's looks. Don't build a nice house in a low rent neighborhood. Sell the Remington or use it as is and put a nice barrel on an action worth investing in. Their site is www.montanarifleman.com but there is far more information here. Do a search. Most of the topics are in Gunsmithing.
