Rebarreling a Savage??

Howdy!

I ordered a Rem VSSF in 22-250 and it came in last night. Unfortuantely, I could not convince myself or the very experienced folks at the store that it was actually new. Significant wear on the lugs (black layer wore off on like it had been cycled 300 times), gouge in the composite stock, nasty flat spots on both the bolt and action where the 2 make contact when closing the bolt, significant brass on the bolt face... Anyhow, that gun is going back.

Having cruised the forums on 22-250's, I read a lot of arguments pro Savage 12bvss, so I told the guys to just get me one of them. I expect to have a blast with it until I shoot it out.

My question is what is the general consensus on rebarreling a Savage action? Is it significantly harder than a 700 action? Is it difficult to find a gunsmith willing to work one? It would be rebarreled in 22-250 or 220 swift more than likely. I've not seen anything on it, so I appreciate any feedback.

I think them savages have a lock not on the barrel so you can adjust the head space. I bet if you got a set of go ,no go gauges you could do it yourself.

Savage bolt actions with the barrel nut are one of the easiest to rebarrel. I have five different barrels for each of two actions. Also have extra bolt faces to swap around. This makes it cheap and easy if I want to try out the latest "wondercaliber" by RemChesterFed.
