How much does it typically cost to open up a standard magnum M70 classic to H&H length? Thanks for the info.

Buy the long magnum bolt stop, ejector and mag box. Or simply shorten the current ones and remove the spacer from the back of the mag box.

As usual just my $.02

You don't need to do anything other than get a new magazine box if you are using an M-70 action that has a standard magnum bolt face (like 300 Win Mag, 7mm Remington Mag, etc)

I made one into a 404 Jeffery from a 7mm Rem Mag, and I did have to open the feed rails slightly, but that was a fatter cartridge.

I had one done in a .300 H&H once that started life as a 7mag. What was mentioned above was done to mine. I ask about opening the loading port on mine. The smith said he would do it for an extra $80 if I wanted it but it wasn't necessary. I didn't do it and the rifle is going on it's 6th season and worked like a charm. Probably the smoothest feeding rifle I own. Of coarse most of that is due to being a 300 H&H.

The PRE-64 Mod. 70, a shorter action WAS opened up by Winchester and the action bridge WAS slightly relieved to accept the H&H case. I have had 10 of these over the years and still have a minty original .375 and a custom .375 H&H "shorty" on the action. This is my favourite .375H&H action by far as it holds 4+1 and without a bulky, costly drop mag; it also feeds superbly.

The more recent "Classic" action was made in the "Express" action as well. These will have the rear bridge milled back to provide a longer loading/ejection port. These are the ones that require the bases with .330" rear screw spacing. I've got 4 of these lounging around my house as I speak. These will include Model 70 Classics produced as 375 H&H's, 300 Weatherby's, 300 Ultra Mags, and 7mm STW's, and, perhaps others. I have no idear whether this is a necessary operation in a conversion, only that this is how Winchester produced them.

My 7STW works just fine with the std port.

OK, so no machine work is involved. That's great! Now, how much for the new bolt stop, ejector, and long mag box with follower? Where can I acquire these parts? Thanks.

I bought mine from Winchester at the time total was around $30 if my memory is working.I just checked Brownells and they list them as NA.

If you can't find them the current ones can be changed in a matter of a few minutes.

You really don't HAVE to buy anything. The spacer in the magazine can be removed and the boltstop can be shortened about .10 and not replaced. As far as the follower goes, I bought a .375H&H follower for mine but found the 7mag follower worked mush better so I stuck it back in.

I did mine with purchasing no parts at all.....
