Have a new toy, 1917 enfield (not sure of maker, will have to take mounts off to find out)in 35 Whelen improved..(eat your heart out)....I was told it is a Douglas
barrel.....how can I tell, where should I look for ID, at
this point I can't find anything other than the Caliber which is stamped on the left side of barrel and white in color. I have searched but cannot find any other marks.

Whistler,
Unless the barrel maker has ID on the side of the barrel it's not possible to tell. When a barrel is chambered any identifying marks are removed from the breech end on the first cut to square the shank. Jim

You have another option. Locate a gunsmith in your area who has a 20 power bore scope. Have him scope it. I have one in my shop, after looking at the bore of a few hundred barrels I can tell the differance between a cheap or factory barrel and a premium barrel such as Douglas, Shilen, Pac Nor, etc.

The cheap barrels will have many obvious tool marks where as the premium quality barrels will be extremely smooth and uniform. The performance of most of todays premium quality barrels are all very good, so it would not make a differance if it was Shilen, Douglas, Lilja, or what.
