The CZ550 is roughly based on the 98 Mauser?? After reading the article in Shooting Times and comparing the CZ bolt to the 98 bolt, there seems to be a good bit of difference. Just how much "Mauser" is in the CZ? Thanks, Cobalt

Cobalt,

Could you enlighten us as to waht you discovered when you did the side by side comparison between the CZ550 and the M98?

Thanks,
Todd E

Todd E,
Other than the obvious safety difference, the CZ bolt has but one gas escape port, forward of the collar of the extractor. The slot for the ejector is cut into the bolt body on the CZ rather than into the locking lug as on the Mauser. The increase in bolt body diameter just forward of the bold sleeve on the 98 is not present on the CZ. There may be some other differences, but these are the obvious ones. Cobalt

As for similarities the BRNO has two lugs, a long extractor, and an inner shoulder agaist which the barrel abuts (described by some as the "c-ring"). Differences includes the ejector, striker, trigger system and the barrel threads.
The mauser 98 bolt was enlarged in the area of the cocking cam to reduce the cam angle. This was because of the longer striker travel than on the M70 Winchester for example. The Springfield which has about the same travel as the Mauser does not have the larger bolt diameter here and the cocking cam angle is necessarily steeper. Regards, Bill.

The CZ 550 has three lugs. But whereas the 98s 3rd lug is within the rear bridge, the CZs lug is smaller than the 98s and slightly back, behind the bridge, before the trigger mechanism. While one could argue that this is somewhat weaker, the CZ is missing the thumb hole cutout which greatly reduces ( IMHO ) the idea of a third lug. Theres lots of metal in the CZ, and it has a flat bottom, which should reduce flex and as a stable bedding platform.

The trigger is easily adjusted, and works as a set trigger, too, if You wish.

It seems quality is getting up, I could not complain about the metalwork in mine. The cocking is different from a 98, but that may be feeling only.

The stocks are well inletted, but theres too much drop. Wish they would look at a Winchester Classic stock and just copy it.

Handled a CZ in .500 JRY that weekend!! Boy, what a barrel!! Dont wish to shoot it ...

Good shooting!
