I want to put together a 404 Jeffery and want to purchase a cz 550 action from brownells. Should I buy 375 bolt face or the 416.

You'll want the .375 bolt face. The .404's rim is just .007" larger than the belted mag but, in fact, most of the belted mag bolt faces require little or no opening up for the .404. I built one on a post-64 PF action and never had to alter the bolt face.

Unless you want a mauser action, you might consider a classic model 70 rifle chambered in 300 Rem Ultra mag for a donor.

I have recently seen one on gunbroker for about 1k and it is a re-barrel and may require the bolt to be opened a little. I just did one and was pretty slick. The nice thing is the mag box will work and you can crossbolt the stock. It might be the way to go provided you don't mind a 404 model 70.
