I have a P1917 by Winchester, already had some chopping done so it will never be stock again and now I have a question. I am toying with the idea of making a sporter using this action, maybe in 35 Whelen. The barrel appears to be good so should I rebarrel or have it rebored? What about the difference in cost? This is one of those things that on Monday I am ready to sell but on Thursday I want to keep and rework. Words of wisdom here? Lord, give me patience 'cuz if you give me strength I'll need bail money!! 'TrapperP'

For the price of a New Lothar-Walther barrel, rebarrel! Have to remove the barrel to rechamber, right? So get a new barrel for around $100.00 shipped! Rusty We Band of Brothers! Unless the orininal barrel is unique in some way (integral rib, unique markings, etc.) or the breeching is complicated to machine (WInchester 95 or Manlicher Schonauer (sp)), you are usually dollars ahead to rebarrel. Sorry guys, it probably was $204.00 shipped. Bought them 2-3 years ago. Sorry for the misinformation! The two I bought were .423 for my 404 Jeffery projects. They shoot great! If you can do the work yourself then a re-barrel might makes more sense but you still either have to turn it or re-bed it , plus blue it. I just had Dan Peterson re-bore my original barrel to 9.3x62. As it was already in a nice full length mannlicher stock so I didn't have to have a new barrel turned and blued. it shoots better than the original and was cheaper in the long run. 458Win I have a FN JC Higgins 30-06 that I was planing to rebarrel in 9.3 x 62. Would it be a good option to have Dan Peterson rebore the factory barrel? Dr B

The enfield barrels are not the quality steels used today and the cost is less by just rebarreling. I've been very happy with Douglas and I get them Via Brownells. /////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////// "Socialism is a philosophy of failure, the creed of ignorance, and the gospel of envy, its inherent virtue is the equal sharing of misery." Dr B, An hour ago I was just looking at one of my spare JC Higgens and thinking the exact same thing but decided the thing to do would be what I recently did to a pre-64 M-70 - and that was have a stainless 9.3x62 barrel installed. How can you beat that for all around AK hunting? Dan Pedersen is several months behind on barrel boring as of a month ago when I talked to him. If you need the rifle in less than six months I would go the rebarrel route. JMHO Rich
