Sendero 300 RUM ----> 338 edge conversion

MRAMSAY10Sendero 300 RUM ----> 338 edge conversion
I am 99% sold on a Rem Sendero 300 RUM. Now, I want to convert it to a 338 EDGE.
Will everything work for the EDGE but the barrel?
Can I have the existing barrel re-bored?
What is the best and most cost effective way to get this done gentlemen?

Toomany ToolsThe Edge is based on the same case, so I'd pull the barrel, ship it to Dan Pederson and have it bored to .338. Once it comes back I'd set the headspace and you're done. In fact, I did almost this same thing recently with a .30-378 on a McMillan action. Worked great.

MRAMSAY10TT,
Thanks. how much $$ do you think it would cost to get it re bored and to have someone install it? I don't have any of those kind of tools.

ramrod340You will find a rebore will cost you as much as a new barrel. I"d spend my $$ on a new one.
As usual just my $.02

MRAMSAY10Ram,
So how much $$ to rebarrel(Hart fluted) the sendero with a 338 edge or 338 ultra?
15 January 2010, 09:38
PeglegGo with a new barrel and run as much length as you can. The EDGE thrives on FPS. Have a muzzel break put on it and you will have a shooting machine. Top it off with top of the line glass and shoot into the next county!
The only easy day is yesterday!

fireball168I had Greg Tannel fit the extended Wyatt's internal magazine box to the one he put together on my original 300 RUM Sendero - the increase in OAL seemed worth it to me for the price.

jeffeossoa rebore will cost about 250, before chamber and refinish (as needed) .. the sendero has a thick barrel, and might would work just fine.
i would consider it -- Malm, westpac here, would be a decent contact to talk this through with.

MRAMSAY10Fireball, how much did that mod cost you with the magazine and all?
Jeff, thanks. I will pm him and pick his brain.

Ram,

Comparing a rebored factory barrel and a fluted Hart is like comparing a Chevy to a high $$ BMW.
http://www.cutrifle.com/reboring.htmlQuotes around $220 for a rebore rerifle and $295 to rebore, rerifle and chamber but they don't list the 338edge reamer so that would be an extra cost.
YOu can get a Douglas, Walther, McGowen, Shilen contoured blank for same $220.
A Hart Lilja etc will run you around $350
Flutes are $75-150 depending on who does them.
REchamber or chamber $70-150+ depending on how much action work you have done.
Only thing a rebore might save you is a $80-100 reblue.
To me even the lower line of new barrels is light years ahead of a factory barrel.
As usual just my $.02

MRAMSAY10Ramrod,
THanks for breaking that down. Re-barrel it is. I was told to get a Hart by an older gunsmith that does phenominal work with older rifles, but I haven't seen any tactical types he's worked on. Is Hart the benchmark for long range barrels?
15 January 2010, 20:53
ramrod340Looks to me like Hart will furnish install and chamber for $650 + $120 to flute + bluing. Again they don't list the 336Edge.
As usual just my $.02

MRAMSAY10Thanks again. I think they are listing it as a 338-300 ultra. I am fairly sure they are the same thing. I think I will give them a call and make sure I am not missing something.

Shilen -
What about "fluting" a barrel?
Fluting is a service we neither offer nor recommend. If you have a Shilen barrel fluted, the warranty is void. Fluting a barrel can induce unrecoverable stresses that will encourage warping when heated and can also swell the bore dimensions, causing loose spots in the bore. A solid (un-fluted) barrel is more rigid than a fluted barrel of equal diameter. A fluted barrel is more rigid than a solid barrel of equal weight. All rifle barrels flex when fired. Accuracy requires that they simply flex the same and return the same each time they are fired, hence the requirement for a pillar bedded action and free floating barrel. The unrecoverable stresses that fluting can induce will cause the barrel to flex differently or not return from the flexing without cooling down a major amount. This is usually longer than a shooter has to wait for the next shot. The claim of the flutes helping to wick heat away faster is true, but the benefit of the flutes is not recognizable in this regard until the barrel is already too hot.

MRAMSAY10Interesting Phil. Never read that before. Why so many fluted designs if they are bad by design?

If he offers it, it got done on that rifle.
I don't recall the labor being itemized.

Dans40XCA hunting rifle-
A cut rifled 1:10 twist Bbl chambered/throated with std SAAMI spec 338 Rem Ultra chambering over the Edge as the difference of 150fps at 1K is a couple clicks of the turrets in elevation.
Brass-neck it/prime it/load & shoot.
Dies-off the shelf
1K Bench rifle-
A cut rifled 1:9 twist Bbl turn neck 338 Edge chambering for the slight advantage of Time in Flight to push the 300's @ 2950fps.

MRAMSAY10Dan,
Point taken. Here is my thought process, please feel free to critique:
Use the sendero 300 ultra for about a year. Then get the barrel redone and action tricked out. Since I will already have the 300 ultra dies and brass, both can be reused for the 338 edge with slight mods. Again, I want your experience guys to let me know of a better way.
Jeff,
Sure seems like there are a lot of "opinions" on things

Would you own a fluted on a long range hunting rifle?

That is the part they always forget to mention.
