Help with a Whitworth Stock Identification

Hope you guys can help. I bought this stock several years ago. My assumption is it was a late interarms Whitworth stock since it has the cut for the cross pin floorplate release. The barrel channel is huge with the spot for barrel recoil lug. The Douglas nor Shilen heavy sporter contour would fill it (just based on measurements). The front sling base is on the stock. The grip cap has a case hardened cap.

Any ideas what it would ahve been chambered in? Hard to see but there is some nice grain hidden under the brown finish.

A friend has a Whitworth in 458WinMag that looks just like yours.The recoil lug cutout indicates that the rifle was either a 375H&H or a 458WinMag.The barrel channel does look huge,maybe someone rebarreled the rifle and opened up the barrel channel

Best I could tell it had never been used. The inside of the channel was the same stained finish as the outside. I sanded some off to see if there was grain under it.

Did the 375 and 458 use different contours?

Now Jeffe you know bondo would be the wrong color. A little epoxy with that brown stain they have in Accuglass and it would match perfect.

The thread got me to wondering if the magazine box cut-outs are different for the 458 and 375? I think the 375 box is longer. You may need to work the stock depending on if you want a long magnum or short.

Well I thought the floorplate on both the 375 & 458 were the same with the changes made on the box only. But I've been wrong before. A basic Daly Mag tiggerguard fits with what I would call normal factory clearance.

The floorplate/trigger guards are the same but mag boxes I have seen are cut and extended to the front for the 375. I've never seen a 458; that's why I asked. Also, I believe the mag boxes are integral to the floorplate, not sepatrate pieces.

The only 375 MKX I have seen and I can't say it was a factory or not the front was extended but they had kept the countour the same on the outside. Kind of a bottle neck look.

Hey you guys with the factory Whitworths what does you mag box look like? Is the floorplate the same as the normal magnum or longer?

Well ramrod you just had to ask, and I got to wondering myself. I have both a .375 and a .458. The .458 magazine interior length is 3.40 inches. The .375 is 3.70 inches. The .375 magazine appears to have been hogged out or extended in the front because the floor plate is the same size and its hinge extends about that same .30 inch into the magazine on the .375. Hope this helps.

They both use the same guard, the .375 has the front of the magazine milled out and a sheetmetal extension spot-welded in.

OK but what about the stocks? That was really my question; are they inletted differently for the 458 and 375 bottom metal? Is the 458 hole shorter than the 375 hole?

When I put a normal Magnum guard in this stocl there is a 1/4"+ of room in front of the magazine. The bottom of the inletting looks normal. The enlargement comes down from the top and stops where it would hit metal on the triggerguard.

Now that I have made that as clear as mud.
