I've had 7 or 8 Remington rifles but never noticed. Is there a difference in the Remington, say 30'06 action and a 300win Mag. Action. I know there must be a very long action for cart. such as the 300STW and the 300RUM and larger longer cartridges, But say the 7mm mag and 300mag, are they in a longer action?

Could I build a 300mag on the Standard long action or is it to short.

3 basic sizes. Long action covers 30-06 to the biggies you mention like 375 H&H and the RUMs. Short action covers the 6 MM Rem/308 class down to 17 Rem. The third is the Model 7 which some consider to be a different action than the 700 but I don't, really. It's about .5 inch shorter than the 700 SA and covers .223 up to .308 based cases.

There is no "magnum" sized Rem 700; the differences are in the magazine boxes and followers. But you need the right bolt face.

Will Remington supply a bolt for the .532 bolt face? Can you machine a larger diameter bolt face? or do I have to buy a 300win mag. It's beginning to sound like I'd be better off buying one. The problem is that I'm left-handed, that in it self kind of limits me in caliber selection. Unless I want to spend an arm and leg. Also the thought of doing some basic gunsmithing has it's charms, I'm retired and like to tinker, I have the vices and tools needed. A set of go- no-go gauges. shouldn't be a big problem. Who know, only the Shadow knows..........

Remington won't sell critical parts like bolts. And converting a .473 to .532 is a little tricky. Easier to trade some one yours for a magnum. The cheap way to convert is with a SAKO style conversion kit but many folks think that is a mistake.

Dave Kiff sells bolt bodies for Remingtons. You get a superior product and he will grind the bolt body diameter to size for you. Butch

Thanks, Butch...

I checked out the Dave Kiff web site, it looks like he is a very good gunsmith, etc. I didn't see any pricing on the site or lead time. Any Idea's, do I need to send him the rifle or can he fit the bolt without the rifle? I'd like to have a Pac-Nor barrel installed. ??? Anyway thanks for the information...........

Mike

I don't think that Kiff does gunsmithing but he can probably recommend a 'smith near you.
Remington will sell you a new bolt but you mus send a rifle to them, minus bolt, and they will install a new bolt with correct headspace.
Bolts often appear for sale on Ebay but LH bolts are scarce.
