Would any of you gentlemen have a source for ebony? Or ebonized walnut? I am in need of enough for 3 forends. I have 3 guns for Friends of NRA fundraisers that I am working on can't seem to run across any in the right size. Blocks I find are much too big,...and expensive. Thanks in advance.

Give these guys a call. They sell some very nice pieces extremely reasonably. I am not sure about the shipping because I stop in and buy it but its worth a try. Its not listed on their website but they have a very nice selection of exotic woods. Just tell them what you want. http://ahturf.com/store/index.php Dirk Schimmel D Schimmel LLC Dirk@DoubleRifles.Us 1-307-257-9447 Double rifles make Africa safe enough for bolt guns!

FWIW I always use the acrap cutoff sections from the large Brownell's pieces to make grip caps and escutcheon inserts. Also have made skeleton grip cap inserts from ebony with good results. Of course this accounts for only part of the scrap, so occasionally I'll epoxy/laminate 2 of the large flat scrap pieces together into one much-larger piece suitable for a small forend tip. "Waste not, want not!" or maybe I'm just cheap.... Thanks to all for the other sources! Regards, Joe __________________________ You can lead a human to logic but you can't make him think. As much as I hate them in general, I use ebay for exotic woods. I picked up a piece of Gabon ebony a few years ago to do a fore end and grip cap. Spent about $30 and still have enough material left to do 3-4 more stocks Mike Ryan - Gunsmith

I've bought some from a local Rockler store... less than $15 for a block good for 3-4 tips/caps. "If the women don't find you handsome, they should at least find you handy."

Magnum, I have purchased various species of hardwoods from Woodcrafters and Gilmer as both are only a few miles from me. That exposed, I found looking at an ebony block only covers part of the story. Most ebony blocks are covered in parafin and the true nature of said block is not evident. One need ask permission to scrape the parafin off for a close-to-real assessment. The parafin hides character, sawn location relative to the heart, and checks. I am close to both afore mentioned sources and would pay either or both a visit, on your behalf, should you require a personal touch not within your reach. I believe their prices are in the $30-40 range for a 2x2x12" block on my last visit a couple of weeks ago. My offer is on the table. Luck, Stephen 360-750-9694 or PM
