Help please, Question on Reboring
Gentlemen,
being left-handed the offerings in large caliber are limited...as is my budget. My question is; do any of you know a source for re-boring a Ruger LH 300 win mag to .404J and is this even feasable. You can email me at larry at pcdrs.net if you like.

Thanks in advance for your input.

No, there are several reasons why this will not work. The action is too short for the Jeffery which is the main deterent. This rifle can be rebored and rechambered to 358 Apollo Magnum, 458 Devastator, and the 458 Win. Magnum. Hope this helps.

A normal magnum action Ruger can be convert to 375H&H with very little work. Mostly changing out the mag box. No reason it can't be made into a 404 that I can see. Unless there is something critical about the barrel I would opt for a rebarrel vs rebore.

Check this out.

I have not seen a Ruger converted to 375 this way but have seen one is 7STW.

As usual just my $.02

Thanks guys, appreciate your replies. The article was very interesting. I am sure there is a less expensive avenue but I really like the Ruger. I believe I am going to seek a gunsmith and try it as I have a real desire to have a 404J.

Check the OD of your barrel, then subtract 0.423" from the OD. What is the difference?

Barrel wall thickness may be your major limiting factor.

You might want to procure a .375H&H (or .375 Ruger) barrel from a Ruger #1-H and have that rebored instead. There should be adequate barrel wall thickness left over to handle the pressures of a .404 Jeffery.

Honestly, reboring isn't that much cheaper than re-barreling with a Pac-Nor, and the wait time for re-barreling will be shorter. Price them both out and see which is more cost effective.

unless the barrel is "special" with sights or ribs or a very nice stock ... well, reboring is not a normal choice..

ruger barrels tend to be VERY thin...

a 300 win will be about .520 or so, at the muzzle, right? it will have to be .623 for a rebore, MINIMUM

pacnor, shilen, it&d, or mcgowen can do this for your, faster and cheaper.

you'll need a longer mag box and should be ready to go

#1 or #3 barrels are HUGE at the breech, and will require a recontour, there
