On my way to Home Depot for a couple new trash cans last night, I stopped at a gun shop. At this one I know the owner and as it turned out, also the guy and gal behind the counter last night. They've had a vintage No.1 on consignment for a month or more and I've been interested enough to think over an offer. The rifle was still on the rack and as I fondled it and thought out loud about my offering price, one of them called the seller and got an acceptance. Now I wanted a No.1, and I wanted the 3.5X10 Leupold mounted on it, I just didn't have an immediate plan to buy it. It's chambered in 06, which I don't want, but I was really buying a generic No.1 and the scope. In my mind this rifle needs to be chambered for a rimmed cartridge, but which one. My rack doesn't have a varmint rifle, and I think the No.1 lends its self to this use particularly well. I also don't have a large medium such as a 400/350 Rigby, or for that matter a large bore, a nitro express, .450 to .470. No 500's please. Maybe I should save the barrel and re-chamber to .30 Krag or .303, if possible. Who out here shares my view and has gone here before me.

Patrick,

I certainly share your thoughts, but haven't figured out what the magic chambering is, and I don't have a #1 yet. I also agree on the rimmed case. I've been thinking something along the line of a 45-70 or .348 case necked down to 6.5mm, for a nice long range round. The 6.5's have always appealed to me, shoot tiny groups, and have an allure to them. It is also a double duty varmint round, with a decent size case and 27" barrel, you should be able to push the 85's 3500 fps. You can also drive the 140's 300 fps for medium sized game.

As far as the larger bores, a 470 NE has a certain allure for me, but I'd start with a tropicle #1. I suppose the 458 bore is eminently more practicle, but with the ruger 480 out now, there are quite a few .475" cast bullets for milder loads.

You got a #1, so thats half the battle, enjoy figuring out what you'll chamber it to.

Oh, the -06 can't be re-chambered to a 30-40 or .303, the cases are smaller in dia, so the entire chamber section would have to be cut off the barrel, and that just isn't plausible. If you want a hot 30, there are veryous rimmed cases that could be used, the 45 basic could be cut whatever length you want, and tapered accordingly.

How about a 25 Krag Improved? Or a 225 Win? Or a 260 rem (same base)? I've heard mixed things about Nitro's on No.1's.

I have two No 1's, both of them were acquired with the absolute intent of having them rebarreled. The first one was originally chambered in .270 and I had rebarreled to .257 Roberts Ackley Improved and is a real tack driver. The second one was chambered in 7mm Mag and it is currently in the shop being rechambered to .375 H&H Ackley Improved, in preparation for my pending African trip in 2003.

I don't necessarily agree with your assertion that they need to done up in rimmed cartridges, there are just way to many rimless cartridges out there for one to take a leap backwards like that. But I do share your interest in the No. 1, they are truly an intriguing piece of workmanship. I've wanted one for years and finally ended up with these two... and I could swear that late at night, when the lights are off and there isn't any other distractions, I can hear yet another No. 1 calling me in the distance.

Patrick,

I have to go with BigBores on this one, the .25 Krag will make a great varmint rifle in the No. 1 if you use the full length version. I have put this cartridge on Siamese Mausers for the very reason that they have a rim and feed quite well from the magazine.

If you want a big bore I would suggest the 375 Flanged Magnum Nitro Express.

Mr. Mike,
Do you have any published data for .375 H&H AI? I've been thinking about it for a #1.

KilgoreT,

I have a little, but it is pretty outdated. One of the other members of this forum and I had a nice exchange a month or two ago and he provided me with so data he had been working with. Click on the following link to go to that exchange:

Thanks to one and all for the thoughts. I spent the weekend reading all I could find on .22 cal varmit rounds, focusing on the .225 Win and .220 Swift. I have a VG-24 in final stages in 6.5 Hawk or I might consider a 6mm or 6.5. If I had the time to play with a wildcat, I would look at a 22/303. I had a first issue No.1 45/70 in the early 70's and used it for bear over dogs, but alas, something else caught my eye and it was gone. My interest in a rimmed cartridge is just nostalgia. As I've never owned a varmit rifle, the Win or Swift will probably carry the day.
