Specifically the longitudinal styrations on the exterior portion of the bolt lug

Bothered? Yes. Surprised? No. Looks like they had a wee bit O' chatter. New rifle? The finish on the extractor isn't what I would want to see either.

The proper application of quality control is one of the biggest challenges in manufacturing. Especially if it is visual inspection with several inspectors of varying skill.

I would polish the chatter marks off.
Really? Those cuts on the bolt face, extractor, and lug do not look like they are 50 years old.

They are reminiscent of cutting torch marks.....and in this case I suspect from escaping gas due to a ruptured case....is this possible and if so does it make the action worthless?

I just got back from Remington arms, empty handed. That's what's bothering me....
Got a call yesterday informing me my rifle was ready for pickup. I asked him when, and he said 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Guess the plant doesn't stop. So 110 miles later I'm told by the guard that my rifle is still in the repair shop, and won't be accessible until Monday. It's disturbing to say the least that there is that kind of disconnect there.

Duane,
Thanks for posting.

I'm quite convinced that the "chatter marks" are actually gas escape flows of a burst case.....is this possible....look at the slag deposits around the oerimeter. I can check the headspace when I get the gun and can correct it in the shop.....however I'm beginning to be concerned with unseen damage to the metal itself

Nothing I would be concerned about; but the bolt face, extractor and the lug have been faced in a lathe; who knows why. Marks from gas cutting; unlikely; the gas would cut other places as well if that were the case. Looks like chatter to me. And the bolt face has been re-cut; yes, check the headspace. Why don't you ask whoever did the work on it.

Looks like a normal post mid 50's model 70 bolt face.

I have seen lots of them with chatter marks on the leading edge of the LH lug. Simply chatter marks from the lathe tool.

The recess in the bolt face is quite common as Winchester changed assembly operations sometime in the mid 50's

The old way was to ream the barrel to fit the bolt.

Then Winchester changed that to facing the last .010 or less from the bolt face to set final head space. Hence the slight ridge at the bottom of the bolt face opening.
