ramrod340M70 Experts needed
OK I ordered a M70 SA featherweight stock to use as a pattern. Included with the stock was a little box containing a "plastic spacer" for I assume the bottom of the mag box. This for different bottom metal? I "assume" that if I install that spacer in my pattern then if someone wants a copy they could simply remove the extra wood. Or should I leave it out of the pattern?
Not being a M70 shooter this one has this old man

Me too and I have seen a few M70s. Must be a new thing. Is it a blind mag stock?

ramrod340Nope open. The spacer fits in the mag box opening.
Have not run across that before. Used to be, they blocked off the mag boxes from the inside by spot welding spacers inside, for short calibers.

OngweStock is for the "new" one piece bottom metal. The spacer allows one to use the older two piece floorplate/triggerguard.

I was wondering if that was the case.

ramrod340That is it. So that is for the old 2 piece bottom? Does it go into the stock with the smooth side out?

BaxterBYes, you are right. Here is one in a B&C Medalist that was made for the one piece bottom metal.
If you machine a stock without that spacer in place, it won't fit the older M70s with the two piece bottom, which are the most common. I guess you can offer both variations.

Need to look at how it could be made to work without the bottom metal holding it in place. I guess if you install the spacer than cut the wood the resulting stock could still be used for a one piece it would just require extra fitting.

BaxterBCOuld you maybe install it using a rubber type cement, put the magazine box in there until it sets up, and then ease out the box? It might hold enough to run a pattern. Then you could take the spacer out later? Dunno..just guessing
