Feeding Issue With Ruger M-77

Got a new Ruger Model 77 "Compact Mag." in .308 Win. that has an issue with feeding cartridges. When I load-up the magazine the bolt fails to pick-up & feed a cartridge into the chamber, from the LEFT side of the magazine. Wondering if this is due to the magazine spring or the follower?? Otherwise the rifle is fine.

One round isn't a problem, but load the magazine with one additional or 3 or 4 then the feeding problem begans. It's the left side of the magazine follower.

I would start looking for a burr on the rail, a dent mag box ect that could be catching the follower, spring or round and not letting the round up high enough for the bolt to catch it.

Is the base of the round tilted down.

Is the mag spring installed properly,is the follower installed properly. Is the floor plate latching properly allowing the shell to lift high enough.

I would make up a few dummie rounds blacken them and see if you can tell where the contact is.

There is always the possibility that you have the wrong spring, follower, mag box one or all.

Also the Ruger 77 2-piece bottom metal bedding system can be a problem if tension is not correct on the 3 screws.

I am not a smith but I had a feeding problem on a 77 MK II that was corrected by setting pressure at 35 in/#s front, 25 back, then 15-20 center (in that order).

Might help but probably a spring or follower problem.

Thanks, very much, p.dog shooter, for the suggestions. Smiler I also believe the issues lies within the magazine spring. I shot the Ruger yesterday afternoon, to sight it in, and it is very accurate. I also strethed the magazine spring slightly and this seemed to help some. Also check the three screws and they are okay. Just wondering if the spring is installed backwards?? OR if it is not the proper spring to begin with. Anyway, it sounds like you are correct with the issue I am having. I also e-mailed Ruger's Customer Service to see what they have to say & they are going to get back to address my issue in a few days.

This may sound too simple but make sure the follower is not backwards. I re assembled one once and put the spring and follower in the wrong direction, Didn't feed well!
