I just purchased a new savage m111 300 win mag. After reading another post I am now wondering what I need to do to break it in?

There are different opinions on that... one pretty common one is to shoot one round, and clean, including copper solvent. Repeat until 10 shots have been through the barrel. Then shoot 3 shots and clean, for another 10 shots.

First, clean it very well, before you fire a shot. The crap that accumulates during machining, shipping, and such is incredible and probably not good for the barrel. After that, don't go overboard on the cleaning.FWIW.

what both above posts said.

i've been breaking in a 243 ruger vt for about a week and it will shoot great one group then 2 moa the next. after talking to alot of guys, it seems i've been overcleaning it. i have a 308 that'll shoot 1/2 moa all day out to 300 and is cleaned every 100+ rounds, no copper solvent either. i wanted this 243 to be even tighter so i took even 'better' care of it.
if it ain't broke....
my non cents, nate
