I started a project last Jan and now it is coming apart. I was going to get a mauser action/243 rebarrel to a 260 Rem. The smith I sent it to told me last month that he couldn't do it, I should buy another action. However that was after I bought a match grade ss shilen barrel thru him. I have the action and both barrels now. Anothe rsmith I had look at it suggested parting out the mauser/243 to fund new action for new barrel. I am not as good financially as I was when this project started. My question is what should I do. Sell it all and wait to do this at later time. How much can I expect to get for the barrel? Mauser/ Thanks

The 243 and 260 both use the same case and operate at the same pressures. There is no action work required, it's just a simple barrel swap.

If you're in Michigan, I could give you the email address of a very fine Michigan 'smith who could do anything you want at reasonable cost. Mr. Koster just completed a fine XP project for me.......r in s.

I guess the screws stripped that were holding the one piece Leupold base on. Smith said that there had been welding done on the action and he didn't want to mess with it. The mauser 243 shot like a house afire. It was very accurate, it just has a heavy barrel and I hated carrying it. The new barrel is not threaded nor chambered.

Send it to a more confident 'smith who can assess if it can be redrilled to 8-40 scope base holes and heat treated to salvage the action.

If it shot 243 rounds without bolt setback or other problems then all it may need is the larger re-threaded holes for the scope bases.

sounds like you need a real smith, not a back yard junkie

I was told that they would have to re-drill but due to the welding that was done they would rather not. I guess I am going to just put the mauser together the way it was and keep it or sell it, It did shoot well. And either sell the barrel or hold it until I can get another action maybe that Savage Target Action. Thanks

You don't know that either smith wasn't confident. Have you thought that perhaps the weld that was done was done poorly and what if the current screws are already 8-40? I've had it happen to me before.

You never know what method was used to weld the holes the first time.

Let's assume the worst case and it is currently 8-40. Assuming you can clean up all the voids and reweld then D&T and heat treat for safety sake. How much is all that? $125 for the heat treat, D&T at $20 a hole = $80. Welding? $75, heck even only $50 brings you up to over $250. You can get a nice used commercial FN for a little more.

Sometimes a fucked up action is just that, a fucked up action. And anyone stupid enough to agree to work on it is a danger. Sometimes it is best to walk away and cut your losses.

thumb

Some things are only worth doing if you are doing the work yourself, not paying somebody to do it. Some things are better converted into demilled wall hanger rifles.
