Ive been thinking about adding a 44 mag bbl to a handi rifle and renting a 444 Marlin reamer and reaming it out. Ive never tried any such thing. How many reamers would I need? (2?) Any other tools needed? It would be strictly a hand reamer proposition. Any other pointers for such a task would be appreciated.

you only need one reamer.....a finishing reamer. They usually are made with a pilot so I suppose that in theory you could use a hand drill to power the reamer. Keep the RPMs down and use plenty of cutting oil. Thread cutting oil used for pipethread cutters will work fine.

I'd far rather see you find someone with a lathe but.....WTH give it a try.

Remaers cost about $90 and if you rent one they're about half that plus if you screw it up.....you pay for it as well.

i'll bite...

WHY...
the 44mag barrel is 82 bucks, then reaming it...

the 45/70 barrel is 82 bucks, and includes sights...

there's NOTHING the 444 can do that the 45/70 can't do and better, other than potentially firing pistolbullets

Thanks for the replies guys. Actually Jeffe the 45-70 is exactly the way Ive been leaning. This is something I want to do just for a "fun gun" for lobbing cast loads at considerable distances with iorn sights. The 444 definatly spikes my intrest though, cant really say why. I guess just because in a 22" bbl it would be easier to load down to a milder recoil level.

Ill prolly just go with the Buff classic 45-70 bbl.
