Got the stock repaired on the Erfurt Mauser I talked about in a previous post. One sort of aesthetic choice that remains is the length of the woood splice that will go on the right and left sides of the action. As we can see, when someone decided tpo use this stock as a baseball bat, they forgot to pick up some of the pieces which chipped off the top. I am going to mill this area out square and want to know where the inlay should end and also what color. I also need barrel suggestions and if ahyone has a barrel or reamer or anything lying around they don;t use, I would be more than happy to trade some stuff around. http://www.cliffsgunsmithing.com/images/Erfurt1916-1.jpg http://www.cliffsgunsmithing.com/images/Erfurt1916-2.jpg http://www.cliffsgunsmithing.com/images/Erfurt1916-3.jpg http://www.cliffsgunsmithing.com/images/Erfurt1916-4.jpg http://www.cliffsgunsmithing.com/images/Erfurt1916-5.jpg http://www.cliffsgunsmithing.com/images/Erfurt1916-6.jpg http://www.cliffsgunsmithing.com/images/Erfurt1916-7.jpg http://www.cliffsgunsmithing.com/images/Erfurt1916-8.jpg http://www.cliffsgunsmithing.com/images/Erfurt1916-9.jpg http://www.cliffsgunsmithing.com/images/Erfurt1916-10.jpg http://www.cliffsgunsmithing.com/images/Erfurt1916-11.jpg I couldn't get the pictures to work so I have the links here. -Spencer

Nice bolt handle! "Bitte, trinks du nicht das Wasser. Dahin haben die Kuhen gesheissen."

Thats what I thought too. Despite the fact that it is in an action of questionable strength, I thought the whole thing looked to good to pass on building something. -Spencer

Re-evaluated what I am going to do about the chunks of wood on the right side. I think what I will do is only grind out enough to take care of the right side to match the basin shape of the extractor bevel. It will really just be a stripe on the right side below the extractor which meets the edges of the bevel in the receiver. Now, to make the stock go from large ring to small ring, it will require a bit of tedious work to cut a couple of walnut slivers with some straight grain to glass in there, as well as a chunk inlayed on the left side to repair the small missing piece there. I am also contemplating trying to inlay some more walnut lower on the right side of the stock where it is now filled with Acraglas. Any comments?

Jig it up on an mdf cradle, squaring up the top of the stock and the boreline, throw it on the tablesaw and cut off the top quarter inch of stock. Take it to a buddy with a joiner to absolutely square up the cuts, epoxy on a quarter inch slab of black walnut and re inlet! I know it sounds bubba but I actually did it to an old shooter stock that was gouged out.

I might consider that if this were a sort of plain stock, but I would feel terrible if I take any more wood than is necessary out of this one - Full fiddleback Exhibition Claro. -Spencer

Looks like a GAG stock. | |||

Not familiar with GAG. I would say 90% of my stocks are from Richards Micro Fit. -Spencer
