I have a great opportunity to pick up a used/new K-77 Varmint, however its chambered for a 6mm PPC. As Ive heard this is a great bullet but its not like you can just pick up rounds at the local sporting store.
Is it possible to re-chamber it to a 308 of other alike? What exactly is evolved in a procedure like this and what would in cost to have this type of work done?

As the new owner of a 6 PPC rifle, I wouldn't do that.

You could have started with a rifle designed for .4730 headsize. For a .308 you'll need a new barrel, pay the work for contouring/chambering/installation. Pay the work for opening up the bolt-face and extractor, pay the work for altering the magazine lips, a new follower and pay the gunsmith for tuning it up to work properly.

The cost of the used rifle plus the cost of parts and work well exceeds a brand new .308 in the same target configuration.

If you don't like 6mm PPC, you'll not want a .22 PPC. The only interesting cartridge left in the same headsize is 7.62X39, then you need a .311 barrel from Douglas, plus some work, ammo will be SO abundant...

Pyrotek - how do you like your 6mm ppc? what do you do for loads, roll your own? if you do role your own, how would you compare the cost for brass

I just won an auction bid on a Sako Vixen heavy barrel in 6 PPC. I haven't got it yet, but these rifles and cartridges are very good at shooting accuractely. There are some cases and a neck sizing die set that come with the rifle. I wouldn't know yet how much brass costs. Usually you buy PPC brass from Norma or Lapua. You buy a small batch,
some will be out of concentricity before/after first loading, benchrest shooters toss these brass out, but these out-of-round cases still do fine outside of benchrest matches.

However there are two types of PPC chamber, one is factory chamber, one is match chamber. Factory chamber have enough neck clearance for factory ammo(YES, they load factory ammo for 6 PPC), match chamber have minimum neck clearance that requires handloads with specific neck thickness turned by neck-turning tools. Shooting factory ammo with standard neck thickness will cause high pressure in these tight match chambers. Factory chamber usually come with factory guns, match chamber usually means the previous owners have installed a new barrel and have it chambered with tight neck. If you are not sure, you can ask the seller. (If it has RUGER logo stamps on the barrel then I'll bet it's factory chambered.)

And YES, I WILL handload my 6 PPC. I reload all my centerfire calibers, this is my first 6mm PPC, it's going to be very interesting. If you haven't started handloading, drop the 6 PPC now, its top-notch accuracy is just going to spoil you [Razz]

I have been toying with the idea of taking up benchrest competition for some now. Most competitive BR shooters shoot the 6mm PPC and it is considered by them to be the most inherently accurate cartridge. The only source I have heard of for 6mm PPC brass and loaded ammo is Sako, but it is hard to find in the USA. Since Lapua doesn't make 6mm PPC brass, nearly all BR shooters buy Lapua 220 Russian brass, expand the neck to 6mm and then fireform them in their 6 PPC barrels. I have never seen 6mm PPC brass offered by Norma.

Pyrotek,
You are incorrect about factory ppc loads causing high pressures in a custom tight necked chamber. The differences are great enough that the factory stuff will not chamber in a tight neck. You can't close the bolt on it.
David,
Norma does offer 6ppc brass and it is excellent. Sako makes it too.
