Greetings all. I recently started a Carcano sporter thread on this forum. https://forums.accuratereloadi...031035082#1031035082 This rifle was a freebie and it's giving me a chance to broaden my hobbyist gunsmithing skills without the guilt of screwing up an expensive rifle. The one thing that I really dislike on the Carcano is the safety mechanism. It is cumbersome and somewhat painful to operate. Has anybody tried to add a sliding thumb operated safety on a Carcano? Even better yet, how about a flag style safety/ bolt lock similar to a Mauser or Steyr? Just thinking outside the box to see if anybody has toyed with the idea. Thanks in advance.

Not much you can do with it. You can work on that little "nose" on the safety where it cams into the bolt to slicken it up. It needs to have a smooth radius. You can gunsmith it so it is pretty smooth to operate. No way to do a Mauser flag style without a whole new bolt mechanism. That thumbpiece serves as a gas shield and as an extra safety lug when it is in the fire position. Its worth retaining.

Thanks for the response Bobster. I'll look into the radius to see if I can fine tune it.
