rgg_7Enfield Bottom Metal
Any manufactures of bottom metal for the P14/17 Enfield? I am aware that military metal can be straighten however wondering what's available. Has anyone tried existing commerical metal, for instance, from a Weatherby long action or a Springfield. Comments appreciated.

Bud WAt the same time I did my M1917, I helped a friend with his... he elected to use the milled guard assembly, spring and follower from the M1903 which fitted with a bit of fiddling. As I recall, he was able to get a stock from Bishop or Fajen inletted for the Springfield metal. Not only did this straighten the stock contour but it made it slimmer. Other conversions used blind magazines with no floorplate.

jimatcati bought a 1917 eddystone that has been "customized"... the bottom metal was removed and a blind magazine created... it dousn't look too bad.. its an aftermarket plain wood stock... useable to test fire something, but not what i wanted in a custom gun... on the .416 taylor tip burns is building for me, im keeping the original bottom metal... i have a jrs sporter pepper laminate from boyd's coming for that 1.... i need another set of bottom metal for the next project...

jeffeossoHere's the deal, and the progression of issues.
if you have custom (mauser-ish_) bottom metal and want it on an enfield that has had a reworked military bottom metal on it, then you will have to have a new stock, as there will be huge gaps all the way around it.
If you can find one, you can take a parker hale 1100M CASTING and easily rework for an enfield,. you then bondo up the old mag holes, put the new one in, and have it turned.
but the PROBLEM is, again, if one wants to rework a mauser like bottom, is that they are vastly thinner.

tin canquote:

are you referring to thin as the height of the mag box,or the actual width of the bottom metal across the floorplate area, for example?
just curious, I have a lot of interest in the enfields these days.
thanks.

rgg_7Enfields are an economical action for the big bore conversions. The most difficult is the bottom metal.
I have straightened trigger guards however they still look like military after hours of shaping/ polishing. Also the floor plate does not release smoothly and often forces you to cycle the rifle to empty the cartridges.
Have seen some variation of bottom metal. Model 70 bow welded to the front rails, Parker Hale 1200C (Clip Conversion), lever releases with straigtened metal and lastly from scratch.
Wisner did make a bow release set at one time and it's listed in an older catalog of his. If anyone has one of these ...any calibre...I be interested in buying it.
I've contacted Sunnyhill however they have no plans for Enfield metal. Williams was asking questions sometime ago however I've not seen an plan from him. From the number of queries I've had, someone should get into this.

jeffeossoTC,
if you had a stock inletted for the mil or model 30 bottom, you can drop (mostly) a mauser bottom metal, in the mag area, and it won't hit either side.
