I am looking or the receaver size on both the L461 and L491. I am trying to find out if they are the same size to switch out barrels. I am wanting to take off my 25x223 on a L491 and put on a 17 Rem off of a L461

I'm almost positive that Sako has not changed their small action barrel shanks, so I'm assuming it would fit. Would you like to sell that .25/223 barrel? Also, I have a .223 barrel if anyone is in need.

Thanks for the info.
I think I want to keep the 25 barrel. It is a 25/223 Harrison Imp. It is a straight walled case, with no taper. I also got a 222 varmint (Marlin Micro grove)

I thought the L-461 was a shorter action than the L-491????? My 6x45 is on a round top L-461... Would not the L-491 be a 243 lenth?? It has been a long time since I have used a Sako action...

The L491 is an older action it is 223,222, 17 length, that uses the long extractor, that is machined into the side of the bolt. To remove it you have to drive it out. If you break it you look all over the place to only find one in CAN.

The short Sako that predates the L461 is the L46-clip feed, also in single shot. I have both.
243 or med. length actions are the L57(clip) and L579.

The L461 & L491 are both short length actions suitable for up to .223 length cases. The L491 was the accountant's revision. ie Cost cutting. Hence except for length the bolt diameter & receiver size are identical between 491, 591 & 691. Previously each size was tailor made for that category.

Hence for a custom .223 for example the 491 is not considered as desirable than the 461. Obviously its also heavier than the older L461 too.

Isn'tr the L491 the PPC bolt-faced short action in single shot configuration. Accuflite Arms sells such an action and calls it the "491". It is the forerunner to the model 75 [i.e., the first Sako with the detachable recoil lug].

The L461 action has a slightly smaller barrel thread. So the L461 barrel will not fit the L491 action. The barrel profiles are different also. These actions are generally found as repeater configuration. Some small number were made as single shot.
