Was thinking of building a 358Winchester on
Savage axis. Would the receiver need to be cut and a recoil lug installed?
Thanks

the savage axis is a entry level rifle... that being said, find a barrel that will fit the action and screw it on.... I doubt the factory stock would be able to hold a recoil lug... its honey combed on the inside.. and filler doesn't like to stick to it... with an aftermarket wood stock, a barrel mounted recoil lug would have something to hang on to...I sell guns at about 20 Texas gunshows as a non FFL holding vendor... I keep several of the savage axis rifles in stock as trading material... for under $300 they are great!!

Oversize barrel Lugs that simply slip over the barrel quite handily on a Savage as from the factory are available if you don't think the factory one is big enough. Good bedding in your new stock is the difference maker I would think. Great Caliber choice!

Boyds provides the lug and a new trigger guard and screw in their stocks, no need for another one.
Or, yes use the 110/Rem type and inlet /bed it. You will have to dig out the one they install first.
358 is not a heavy kicker. .

It is actually, exactly the same. But feels like less probably due to recoil velocity being less (bigger bores recoil differently); recoil energy is the same.
But if you like the 358, you will love the 35 Whelen, or 350 Rem Mag.

The Savage Axis is one pis-spoor receiver from the trigger back but all Savage from the bolt forward...just as strong as ANY savage rifle and all the aluminum trigger krap seems to work OK...I built a 375 JDJ, AKA 375 x 62, AKA 375 x 444 using an Axis receiver and Boyd's stock...absolutely no problems with recoil...that tiny recoil lug is all you need even for a 350 RM. I did mill/replace the plastic front screw mount piece with an aluminum one and install a MB.

You might get a whine or two about "no third lug", but if you are doing something really hairy you SHOULDN'T BE USING AN AXIS RECEIVER in the first place.

If you get right down to it...if that small recoil lug bothers you just use a standard savage recoil lug and inlet the stock to match. For that matter it's the friction between the stock and the receiver PLUS the two receiver screws that handle much of the recoil and you really DON'T NEED a recoil lug for the lessor recoiling calibers.

Go ahead and do your 358 Win...or ANY caliber on the 308 or 2.225" x57 case...You'll be very happy with the results.
