Whose barrel for a Grendel?
OK so I picked up a Daly mini-mauser in 7.62x39 Saturday. I'm gonna see how it shoots but thinking about doing a medium sporter 6.5 Grendel. Whose barrel do you suggest.

The thread in the Mini Mauser is M22x1.5 whose major diameter is .866". This dimension opens up a lot of opportunity to utilize take off barrels from a lot of different actions because you essentially remove the old threads and still have enough diameter to cut the M22. Or cut most or all of the chamber off and still have enough tenon diameter to thread and chamber.

Personally, I would go with a Kreiger or Rock Creek if funds were available. The other ones mentioned are still a good barrel for a little less money.

Unless you have the chamber reamer none of those barrel companies mentioned will chamber the 6.5 Grendel for you.

I went with a Satern. Great barrel and Steve is a stand up guy.

Well, other than that Mrs. Lincoln, how was the play?

Yup, Satern is a nice guy and a friend of mine. His barrels are 5R cut rifling.

He may not be able to mark the barrel as 6.5 Grendel though. He's not associated with Alexander Arms anymore.

Another barrel option is from Lothar Walther, but it will be stamped the 6.5 CSS.

I think I read somewhere that A/A had given up proprietary status on the Grendel.

Yes that is true, BUT it's not officially on the SAAMI site yet, AND the trademark has NOT been released from the Patents office. It's still listed as Trademarked there. This is the thing about Alexander Arms...it's a crap company and operates just as crappy.

So who is going to risk a lawsuit and stamp their barrel 6.5 Grendel?

Oh well, just put a .264 LBC stamp on it. I think Steve has that reamer too.

I recommend a PacNor barrel, and they will contour it the way you want, chamber with their reamer, install it on your action, and do it within a relatively short time. I just skipped the marking of the barrel. If later I decide that's important, I can have it engraved any way I want.

In the 6.5 Grendel chambering there are absolutely no flys on the Satern or the Lothar Walther barrels. I've seen both shoot unbelievable small groups at much further distances then 100 yards.

Yeah the .264 LBC is actually a better chamber because it does away with Alexander Arm's compound throat angle which wasn't so great of an idea. The LBC has a more conventional single angle throat. Les got fed up with Bill Alexander thus the reason he dropped the 6.5 Grendel and tweated the throat angle and came out with his own .264 LBC.

There isn't ten cents difference in the two.

When I get home Thursday, my 6.5 Gren should be waiting for me at the post office. Weather permitting, I'll be at the range with it Friday with some factory ammo for sure, and maybe some handloads put together Thursday night.

It's always Christmas for me, when testing a new barrel, first time it's fired, at the range.

I'm really looking forward to it.

Try to look unimportant. Your enemy might be low on ammo.

I shot the thing with some Privi ammo. I'll say it stayed in the 5 ring of a pistol target at 100 yards.

What barrel did you go with and how big is the 5 ring?

I haven't swapped barrels yet. If it shoots with handload I may leave it alone.

Lothar Walther makes a barrel chambered in 6.5 & threaded the the mini mauser. It doesn't have that weird compound angle throat either. Wink
The last one I did with one of those LW barrels shot 1/2 moa.
