I'm pretty sure the rotors are the same, you might need a cartridge stop but I believe the 308 will work, but savageparts should be able to advise you.

Isn't the real problem to do with the rotary magazine and feeding the larger diameter bullets?

Frank... I don't know what devils are in the details, but I expect that the folks here at AR will point them out before too long. I believe that .308 and .358 case dimensions are identical as far as the rotary mag is concerned.

You can probably buy a new barrel from I believe savageparts.com in Florida. If it is under one million serial number it has square threads and over v-cut. If the cartridge rotor is 308 it should function.

I think that 99 barrel thickness various with model. The .358 from .308 rebore has been discussed on the Savage Collectors forum at 24hourcampfire.com. My recollection is that one or more of those gents have done it. Post your inquiry there.

there's NO WAY a barrel would come out of my shop with the factory THINNESS of the savage 99 in 358.. i have one in my safe, btw... if it's not an 1/8, it's not going to be done by me... NOT because I don't want to, but for liability.

The 20" barrel measures .595 OD at the muzzle.



(.595 - .308) / 2 = .1435 barrel wall thickness

Is this barrel too skinny?





A new barrel would need to be drilled and tapped for scope and ghost ring sight, dovetailed ramp for a front sight, a stud mounted to hang the forend, turned to match existing contour so forend would fit, chambered and blued. Would that really be cheaper than a rebore? Seems like a lot of work.

I'm thinking of a .308 to .358 conversion. If anyone has done this, please tell me about the details.

The 338-08 with a 210 grn Partition sounds interesting also.
