Hello, I just had some questions about replacement sights on the Ruger no.1. I think the rear sight on there now is the same as on my 10/22. It's too small. I want to put a set of express sights on, but don't know how they could be mounted because of that rib on the barrel. If a base was mounted on the rib, wouldn't it be too high? Another option would be to mount the base ahead of the rib, but the distance from the base to the front sight is a lot less. Any recommendations would be very helpful. Thanks, Mark.

You have several options. For a classic multi leaf type sight, obtain one of the sight inserts (less base) from NECG and mill a dovetail in the rib to match (where the original dovetail is). Or, if you want a "Peep" sight, NECG has a nice peep that fits on to the rib where the rear scope ring mounts. For ultimate simplicity and ruggedness, install a single rear sight (meaning no accessory leaves) in a dovetail milled in the rib. I will be posting photos of both NECG sights (the multi leaf, in a milled dovetail in a rib and the Ruger type NECG peep), later in the big bore forum.

John. I have seen these sights at Brownells, and that was the type of sight I was considering. As far as the one standing leaf, I put one of the dakota sights on my 300 and like it very much, it's simple and very accurate for the range I use it for. Being a college student short on funds, I would like to pass on the $40 base and just get the blade and folding leaf. I should go in and check with our gunsmith here and see if he can cut out that dovetail. What should I expect to pay to have that work done?
Thanks for your help. Mark

300 H&H,
All you need to do is cut the dovetail to fit your sight, you don't need a base just the sight itself is replaced...YOu can do that with a dovetail file or a dovetail cutter....not an expensive operation...
