I like to buy this chile military mauser with a trick out Weatherby type wood stock chambered in 7X57 for only $125.00. I would like to swap barrel and have it chambered in 243 A.I. or perhaps a 6mm Remington. So the question is, is it safe to do so? I believe it is stamped Oberdorf as well.
Norseman: DO NOT BUY THIS GUN! You could be killed by your conversion! Please e-mail me and I will give you the address of the Suspect Mauser Action Consortium, a group of like minded saviors of the shooting world. We will buy this rifle and take it out of circulation for the good of us, er--the world. Ya that's it the world. Seriously, sounds like a great deal and should pose no problems to convert if the action is sound, but why?
------------------ If Elmer didn't say it, it probably ain't true.
Norseman, You need to further identify this Mauser, Chile had a number of Mausers...What are the markings on the action?? It could be a wonderfull action or a not so good one...Is it a M-95 or 98?? Are there any dates??
I will post the informations on marking/dates on Tuesday the 19th when the guy get back. The reason I want to do a conversion is because I already own a 7mm in Remington magnum. I wanted a light recoil rifle for target shooting or perhaps varmit hunting.
Why not stay with the 7x57? It is a nice shooting, light recoiling rifle - and you won't have to buy as many different bullets. At least give it a try. The 7x57 is a great cartridge.
Here what I found out, it is a 1895 or M-95 with a stag and lion on the sides of the crown. It is made by Loewe of Berlin and number are A92**. So is this a strong enough action to withstand the pressure of a 6mm Remington?
The action is probably srong enough, but I doubt that very many gunsmiths will jump at the chance to rebarrel it for you, as by reputation it is recomended for cartridges of 45000 cups and less.
