I need to get one more action for a custom rifle. I am trying to decide between a 1909 Argie or a Persian 98/22.Any cost difference, if any doesn't matter. Either one will get the same treatment, surface ground (if using the Persian ALL the Farsi writing will be removed). It will be sent to Pacific Metallurgical for heat treat/recarburizing with some others whether it's the 1909 or Persian. Will be using different bottom metal, so that doesn't matter on the 1909. Is there any advantage of one over the other? Tighter tolerances, better machining, anything? Allen It's a Mauser thing, you wouldn't understand.

I'd pick the one in the best condition. Many however feel the DWM "badge" is mandatory. Aut vincere aut mori

Buy the unissued Persian Mauser's floating around and leave the very interesting original Persian Markings on the rifle.

The Persian was made in Czechoslovakia. Very good steel. It was made in the 1930's. The 1909 is a very nice and smooth action, but made somewhat earlier. With your plan for heat treatment/re-carburization, either action will serve you well. FWLIW, I use Czech actions for large cartridges, and 1909 actions for more traditional cartridges (e.g. a 404J, 8x68S and 9,3x64 on Czech metal; a 7x64, 6.5x57 and 6,5x65RWS on 1909's [5,7x57 as well]). lawndart, Glad to see you back posting more. Hope your health problems are behind you. Are the 1909 actions better machined then the Persian 98/29s? Any reason in particular for your using the Czech actions for the large cartridges and the 1909 actions for the more traditional cartridges? Allen It's a Mauser thing, you wouldn't understand.

Allen I have a couple of 1909 actions here, and all I can say is that they are superbly machined. I don't know about the Persions. I think that what Lawndart was speaking of is that if he were going to use the actions without anymore heat treatment he would choose the later made VZs for the higher pressure cartridges and the earlier made 1909s for the lower pressure cartridges.
