I need to put a new barrel on a pre-war pre 64 m70. 257 Roberts is caliber of choice. Any recommendation for a maker? Can any competent gunsmith handle this? Thanks. Perry

My recommendation is always to find a good gunsmith first, one that is familiar with and comfortable with Pre 64s, then ask him what barrel he likes. Most of the barrel makers make great barrels, but it's usually best to use the gunsmiths preference.

There is an interesting story in the 5th Edition of the Gun Digest Treasury written by Lucian Cary entitled "The Secret of the Old Master" - a story about a rifle barrel maker and installer. Everyone wanted to know the secret of how an elderly gentleman was able to make and install such accurate barrels. At the end of he story the old man reveals that the secret is that there isn't any secret, except that the person has to "know what nice work is and be willing to take the pains to do it"

Shoot Jim Kobe a PM. He knows M70's. ToomanyTools (John Farner) has shown some great work here as well. For a hunting rifle, most any barrel will shoot better than needed. Fitting it is more important than barrel make. Jeremy
