Beautiful rifles. The price of knowledge is great but the price of ignorance is even greater.

Everything on the barrel of the 30-06 is integral - including the quarter rib. Danny Peterson at Cut Rifle turned it out of stainless steel and Lon had it black chromed to match his blue on the rest of the rifle. The Fn action was on my old 30-06 and the bottom metal is a Jerry Fisher/Blackburn rounded one - which make the rifle very slim and easy to carry. The wood and Lon's stock make it easy on the eyes too. It has a 1 in 8 twist and so far really likes the old Hornady steel jacketed 220 solids ( I still have 400-500 of them) It also shoots bullets as light as 150 gr A-max bullets under and inch as well. The Enfield was originally an 06 that Danny re-bored to 9.3x62 and Lon re-shaped the stock. It also shoots well with my load of 286 partitions into inch groups. At only 7 1/2 pounds, with a 22 inch bbl, it is quite lively. Phil, is that "old .30-06" the one you started guiding with; the one that settled you on the 200grain Partition + MRP load for bears in the '06? Talk about an "Extreme Makeover"!?! Wow!

Mike, it has gone through a few makeovers. I'll show it to you this fall. It's better than I deserve. Phil, Those are two VERY beautiful rifles and I would love owning both. That bottom one is just magnificent. I have a huge soft spot for full stock rifles. My Step Dad had several full stock rifles built right after he came home from WW II that I did a lot of drooling over back then. Have fun owning and hunting with them!!! Don

So the stock on the 9.3 was a full length to begin with? Both are beautiful rifles and being something of an Enfield nut, I love the 9.3. Congrats!!!! May the wind be in your face and the sun at your back. P. Mark Stark

Phil, How do your wood guns hold up in Alaska? Do you do anything special to the wood to deal with the wet weather conditions?

This thing was conceived and executed to be an Alaskan using rifle and the Fisher rounded bottom metal makes it slim and comfortable to carry in hand. Mr. Shoemaker Your 30-06 appears to be made from an FN commercial action. I am curious as to whether you or your gunmaker had that action heat treated before it was customized? Thanks.
|
one of us |
No he did not have it heat treated. I have used the rifle with heavy loads for years and as there was no set back. I don't know it for a fact but believe that most of the problems that occurred with FN actions were most likely with the ones that were offered in-the-white. Many of those were even advertised as "not heat treated". The ones used by Sako, Weatherby, FN, Husqvarna, Browning, JC Higgens, Marlin, et al, all seemed to be well treated.
