I have a Sako 75 Finnlite in 6.5x55. I am wondering if the barrel could be rechambered to 6.5x06. It is a standard contour fluted barrel.

Roll EyesThe answer is yes, but you my get a little case swelling near the base depending on your chamber size and magazine length right now. Seems it would make more sence to convert it to a 6.5 X .284.JMHO. fishingroger

Roger, thanks, the action is actually the '06 length, which actually surprised me--I have several 6.5x284's, was thinking of something a little different--was looking for something with a little more zip, any other ideas??

It would make more sense to just leave it alone. Just my opinion.

well...not really.....I made no changes to my VZ-24 when I chambered it to 6.5 X 55 and it works just fine!

Since the 6,5x55 is a bit larger in diameter at the head, you would have to set back the barrel a bit, 1/2" or so, to clean up the chamber.
The Sako 75 does not work to well with to sharp a shoulder, as the lower lug will notch it on its way to the rear. This was the experience of a rifle like this rechambered to the Improoved version of the 6,5x55 some years ago, covered by the swedish magazine JAKT.

As Vapo says, the boltface on many rifles made for the .473" size works fine without any opening.

I agree with bartsche, 6,5x.284 is an easy conversion that cleans up chamber and requires no setback, same capasity as the 6,5-06 and a more forgiving shoulder than the 6,5x55 AI.

More zip need a longer barrel any way.

It doesn't matter with a Mauser style bolt.. however it does on a push feed bolt...

I have a Mauser and Ruger in 6.5 x 55 and both of them will use any type of brass under the sun with no extraction problems...

however I also rebarreled a Model 70 with a pushfeed bolt. it will only extract Winchester brass about half the time... it will always extract Rem Brass...

Rem evidently uses a .473 bolt head on its Swede brass... Win uses the standard Swedish dimensions...

Guys, thanks much for the input. I will look at the 6.5 Rem mag Roger. Brent, thank you for the intel, it may be Bartsche's original suggestion is the way to go, just have several 6.5x284's already.
Seafire, very interesting on the extraction issues with varying brass--never have thought about that.....

just leave it at 6.5x55 as you can achieve 6.5x284 velocities with the swede as long as you have the barrel length.

The 6.5 Rem Mag (68 grains) has about 2 grains more case capacity than the 6.5-284 (66 grains), while the 6.5-284 has about 10 grains more case capacity than the 6.5x55 (56 grains).

I don't think that it would be worth the cost/effort to go from 6.5x55 to 6.5 Rem Mag when going from 6.5x55 to 6.5-284 is as easy as a simple rechambering and slightly more complicated get it to feed job.
