Thanks for the replies. I know mesquite would not be a GREAT choice for stock work, but I have always fancied having a nice 22-250 or other varminter stocked in one. I don't know what effects a large magnum caliber might have on a wood with the properties of mesquite? Thanks again. GREG
Mesquite is as tough and hard as woodpecker lips, the only draw back is finding a piece that does not have sand pockets holes etc. and the fact that it is extremely heavy..It is quite colorfull. The Texas wood normally being much darker than the California variety..
Weatherby made a lot of rifles stocked in Calif. Mesquite.
Ditto on what Ray said. I only did one rifle in the stuff. It is very hard, heavy and dense grained. Checkered well, slow to work. The one I did had a hole clean throught the buttstock. The stock blank guy had filled it with epoxy. It looked like a knot until you held it up to the light then you could see the glow from the other side. I'd take a nice piece of English over it any day. It does have a destinctive look though.

fla3006, I think the area code in Victoria has changed to 361.
At Don's gunshop there is a 416 for sale that has a full barrel lenght brake on it. The guy who made it was from up north somewhere- the gun has had several diff. owners and been to africa several times. The brake is some kind of a copy of a military design - It screws in to the reciever -is as long as the barrel - supposed to significantly reduce recoil. It's diameter is about 1 & 1/2". It is on a win action about $1,100. Does anyone know what I'm talking about- ever seen one?
