Can any of you gentlemen tell me whether or not barrels are interchangeable between Remington Models 742 and 74 (with proper headspace confirmation of course)?

Jerry,

I've been looking into it since I asked this morning.

The main difference between the rem 742 and the 4/74/7400 is that Remington had used an "interrupted thread" design for the locking lugs on the 742.
this design used 12 small lugs, but they went to a three lug arraingment (eventually copied for the Remington 710)
on the later 4/74/7400

So if I swap the bolt with the barrel it should interchange.
The only issue is the price of a boltSmiler

Mabey it'd be easier to track down a 35Whelen barrel for a 7400...
