.500 Jeffrey build on enfield action — switched to .500 A2
Is it reasonable to build a .500 Jeffrey on an enfield.

I have a sporterized enfield that I bought for $75 when I was a kid. It has sentimental value to me but the barrel is no good anymore and has been sitting in the back of my safe for decades now.

I know it's doable with the right smith. But I believe I'd go with the .505 Gibbs. I don't think I want a rebated rim on a dangerous game rifle.

A friend had your combo built by a gunsmith in the Austin area. Drop box magazine, too.
I’ll see if I can get him to post pics here or send me some.

If the receiver is intact, meaning the ears are still there, and not drilled, it is more valuable to be restored, and the P14 is a better platform to start with anyway due to the extractor and bolt face design. .
So I will trade you a P14 with the rear already ground for it.

I’ll ask for more info. Tom can also build it for you.

I would be fine with a Gibbs.

The "problems: with the rebated rim is just another scrap of bullshit... perpetrated by incomponent gunsmiths!

The 500 Jeff was designed especially to fit the standard length 98. So.... bottom line...there's no reason NOT to go with the 505 in the longer Enfield platform

Nowadays, the 505 can be loaded to higher (on paper) performance and admittedly does operate at lower pressures due to the giant case capacity

Will it kill a dinosaur better? Don't know!

I think if I was going to invest the money into have something built, rather than use an Enfield action, I would use the commercial version, the Remington Model 30 action. Personally I love the idea of doing a .500 Jeffery or .505 Gibbs on an Enfield-style action. I love the large flip forward safety and the quality of the machining and workmanship that went into the Model 30 actions is top notch. Pretty sure Jim Wiser wrote an article a number of years ago about building Gibbs on the Enfield/Model 30 platform. You might contact him to see if he has a copy. I thought I had a copy but cannot seem to find it . . . if someone has it it would great if they could post it.

It is a sporterized enfield — Bishop stock and drilled for a scope. I will dig it out and post pics.

It’s a .500 Jeffery on a 1917 Enfield, with a drop box magazine. Don’t like the brake? Don’t get one. Don’t like the DBM? Don’t get one. Don’t like the recoil reducers? Don’t get them. It’s still a .500 Jeffery on a 1917 Enfield action. Lane wanted to know if it could be done. It can. We’re talking about custom rifles. Both were/will be built to the owner’s specs.

I would chamber it in 500A2, great brass, easy to fireform.

I have built 2 500 jeffe on enfields, one 505, a 500 ar, and a 510wells.

it can work, and unless you are planning on going above factory loads, 10# is a good target weight

I think I am going to do a .500 A-Square instead? Thoughts?

Thoughts? Get a Boyds stock for it. This one needs help in the looks department. 500 A2 is easy to get brass for; also look at the 495 A2; it is slightly shorter but is a straight case.

The .500 A2 is the best and most practical of the big fifties.

I have owned and hunted with one for 20 years.

Mine was built by AHR on a CZ 550 Magnum action.

TBH, my AccRel is likely the best .510 round.. shorter and narrower than a 500a2/510wells, and not rebated like the 500 jeffe... and fits in the standard action, from more or less easily available brass....

but the 510wells/500 a2 are both great

Hotdog Lane: That still even has the dogleg bolt!

In my opinion on a '17 that's gotta stay.

I have a fellow in Austin with a .375H&H he wants to sell for more than I'm willing to pay for it. Nice looking rifle. 24", straight bolt handle.
Anyone interested pm me and I'll provide his contact info.

I just bought an Eddystone '06 from a local pawn shop last week. (my 5th one) It has a 12" LOP----! By adding a pad it could make 13" real easy. Fairly decent stock otherwise. Any interest in that stock? It's of no use to me this short, I need a 14 1/4".

I had a .358RUM built a few years ago. Fine rifle. Douglas barrel Tom loves. Not for sale.

Definitely a new stock. And for sure leaving the dogleg bolt-handle.

I love the Enfields big bores, had several and stocked them myself. all were 505 Gibbs..I sold a custom 500 for Jim Wisner to a gent in Reno or Vegas ?? That was one damn nice rifle and his checks had so many zeros on it I had to put new shocks on my pickup to deliver it!! wave

Keep that hammer safey, it may be ugly to some, but it easy to find when your in dire need of it..

I think it’s a great idea, but go along with others here that 505 Gibbs would be a better choice.
My 416 Rigby was built on a P14, and it would be hard to find a sweeter action. It never ceases to amaze me how such a butt ugly action can be turned into a thing of beauty.
