Or, should there be some bedding under the chamber?

I'd say it depends on the action. Long shank barrels I free float the entire barrel. Shorter shanks like the 98 I bed about 1.5" of the chamber. Figure heavy BR barrels are normally fully free so they can be swapped out without removing the action from the stock.

As usual just my $.02

Thanks, I should have given more details, like a M 70 or M 700 300 mag type action.

That's where the excess epoxy flows and most folks, and guns, don't mind it being there. I would suggest that if it is going to be in contact with the barrel, that it be uniform, and that includes the leading edge.

Would that be "floated" or "frosted"?

My rifles with epoxy under the first 1" of barrel shoot better than those with epoxy stopping at the end of the receiver.

I can't establish cause and effect, but I have the beginnings of suspicion.

Sorry, couldn't resist. I am one of the worst when it comes to proof reading.

I always bed about an inch or so in front of the receiver. Never have worried about whether or not it was even on both sides like Westpac says but he may have something there. I don't think I could prove that one way or another.
