I might be coming across a mod70 super grade, and was wondering if I got the extractor color case hardened, would that cause any sort of problems with function? I would be replacing the extractor with a Williams as soon as I got it.

Extractors are spring steel. I don't think casehardening is a good idea.

Have it nitre blued if you want something different.

Nitre bluing gives the steel a deep "electric" blue color doesnt it? I got confused, I saw a pic of a mauser action that was all case hardened, everything except for the extractor. Since the bolt body is jeweled on the rifle in question, I thought the case hardening would look nice. Turnbull Restos has some form of capability to control the actual color during the process. The patterns are never the same, though. Here is the rifle that gave me the idea.

That's pretty, but one trip to the woods and it would look like Fido's back side.

Well, other than that Mrs. Lincoln, how was the play?

Nitre "bluing" can be done in different colors, depending on the temperature used. A "straw" color was popular on Mauser ejector box springs and Mannlicher bolt locks. A bright blue is common on extractors and small screws.

When I called Turnbull's a few years ago they said would only color case Dakota actions (in a bolt gun).

"Experience" is the only class you take where the exam comes before the lesson.

Looks like too much of a good thing.

As a general rule, people are nuts!

I do not think a straw color would go nice with the jeweled bolt. I guess looking for a more "vibrant" deep blue would be a nice contrast between the bolt and receiver. Anyhew, thanks for the input. BTW I did win the bid on that super grade.

Those pics really are not that good, I had the guy send me more of the top of the receiver and such, pretty nice for the price.

When I refinished this 1938 Brno model A, I had the metal rust blued and the springs and screws nitre blued.
