I was wondering if anyone has built a .308 Win. on a long action ??? The reason I ask is that in the Remington 700 short action, the 168gr and 175gr bullets have to be seated very deep to still fit in the magazine. Thanks

Two match guns - one mag fed, one single shot (Palma). The long action is nice in that five rounds fit in the unaltered mag and you can load to any length you please (short of 3.6"!!) Feeds fine from the back of the long box. Mark "Greatness without Grace is mere Vanity" - Hank the Cowdog

I have a 300WSM chambered in a long-action Montana Rifle Company. I can only feed one at a time. I have to put the round into the magazine, slap the bolt home, then pull it back to see if it actually caught the round. I have about a 90% success rate at this. One thing it will do is put any flinching on full display for all bystanders to see and then to make subsequent comments... Considering the Remington is not CRF, you might get away with it. You don't in a CRF gun. At least, I don't in mine...

Yes...and No! Here in the UK we had converted many, many, 303 P-14 and 30-06 Model 1917 rifles into 308 target rifles. The Model 1917 worked best as, of course, it used a correct shaped bolt and extractor from the start. There were never any feeding problems with the conversions based on the Model 1917.

Most folks would chamber the long action to .30-06. My Rem Short action handles the .308 with 180 accubonds quite nicely. I see no need for a long action for the .308. /////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////// "Socialism is a philosophy of failure, the creed of ignorance, and the gospel of envy, its inherent virtue is the equal sharing of misery." I have owned 4 differnt remington 700s in 308. Have never had a problem with col. My mag boxes measure 2.873 and 2.876 om my two current ones. Given that the SAAMI spec is 2.815 IIRC correctly (I think it just slightly over the 2.8 that everyone refers to) I am not sure what problem you are encountering. Mike Legistine actu quod scripsi? What I have learned on AR, since 2001: 1. The proper answer to: Where is the best place in town to get a steak dinner? is…You should go to Mel's Diner and get the fried chicken. 2. Big game animals can tell the difference between .015 of an inch in diameter, 15 grains of bullet weight, and 150 fps. 3. There is a difference in the performance of two identical projectiles launched at the same velocity if they came from different cartridges. 4. While a double rifle is the perfect DGR, every 375HH bolt gun needs to be modified to carry at least 5 down. 5. While a floor plate and detachable box magazine both use a mechanical latch, only the floor plate latch is reliable. Disregard the fact that every modern military rifle uses a detachable box magazine. 6. The Remington 700 is unreliable regardless of the fact it is the basis of the USMC M40 sniper rifle for 40+ years with no changes to the receiver or extractor and is the choice of more military and law enforcement sniper units than any other rifle. 7. PF actions are not suitable for a DGR and it is irrelevant that the M1, M14, M16, & AK47 which were designed for hunting men that can shoot back are all PF actions. 8. 95 deg F in Africa is different than 95 deg F in TX or CA and that is why you must worry about ammunition temperature in Africa (even though most safaris take place in winter) but not in TX or in CA. 9. The size of a ding in a gun's finish doesn't matter, what matters is whether it’s a safe ding or not. 10. 1 in a row is a trend, 2 in a row is statistically significant, and 3 in a row is an irrefutable fact. 11. Never buy a WSM or RCM cartridge for a safari rifle or your go to rifle in the USA because if they lose your ammo you can't find replacement ammo but don't worry 280 Rem, 338-06, 35 Whelen, and all Weatherby cartridges abound in Africa and back country stores. 12. A well hit animal can run 75 yds. in the open and suddenly drop with no initial blood trail, but the one I shot from 200 yds. away that ran 10 yds. and disappeared into a thicket and was not found was lost because the bullet penciled thru. I am 100% certain of this even though I have no physical evidence. 13. A 300 Win Mag is a 500 yard elk cartridge but a 308 Win is not a 300 yard elk cartridge even though the same bullet is travelling at the same velocity at those respective distances.

If I'm not mistaken, the Army (or Marines) used the long action to be able to convert them to a magnum by changing the bolt and barrel. I just heard this from somewhere so don't take it for gospel. There's no reason in the world it won't work and you have the advantage of being able to seat long bullets out. "I ask, sir, what is the Militia? It is the whole people. The Mod. 98 actions allows you to seat the bullet out MUCH farther if you throat the barrel accordingly. I've had no feed problems. roger Old age is a high price to pay for maturity!!! Some never pay and some pay and never reap the reward. Wisdom comes with age! Sometimes age comes alone..
